“I should give an interview,” she says, as if everything that’s already happened regarding this isn’t the stuff of my worst nightmares.

But I can’t deny that her reasoning on this is solid.

“How can you be so sure he, or she, I guess, will rise to this?” I say, as I stand up again and pick up one of the paper to see what it actually says.

“The chance at fame,” she says. “The chance to be recognized for their work.”

“But they’ve been perfectly content to stay in the shadows until now,” I mutter, trying hard to focus on the words I’m supposed to be reading.

Much of the article is Vidmar’s account, and the whole serial killer headline seems to stem mostly from Eva being there. But what worries me is the clear connection they make to the two other cases in November.

“Where did they get all this information?” I ask, looking from Simon, who shrugs to Eva.

“Do you think they’d been following us?” she asks.

“Or someone’s been talking,” I say pointedly, and glance at the main part of the office where Sojer is sitting at the conference table, drinking his tea and glaring at us. The other two look at him too, which is not ideal.

“I’d like to know more about Sojer,” I tell Simon. “Get his personnel files and say it’s because we’re considering him for a permanent position on the task force.”

Simon gasps and glances at Sojer again. “I know you like to be thorough in checking out all team members, but Sojer, he’s had an exemplary career from what I’ve already heard. Are you sure you want to go digging into his past?”

“Yes, I’m sure,” I say. “Better safe than sorry.”

Then I turn to Eva, who is still looking at me with very wide eyes. “As for the interview, we’ll wait with those.”

She narrows her eyes at me. “Why?”

You know why, I want to tell her, but instead I say, “Let’s see what these articles do on their own in terms of drawing him out. And if this doesn’t work, then we’ll talk to the media with something strategic prepared. You can start working on what that could be today.”

She shrugs, but nods. “I have some ideas. I’ll start putting them on paper after we return from interviewing the witnesses.”

I had hoped she’d prefer to stay at the office, because the weather outside is still nasty and all the snow that’s been falling all day is bound to start turning into frozen slush as soon as night falls.

But at the same time, she’s invaluable when talking to family member of victims, always managing to approach them with just the right amount of empathy and inquisitiveness. Since we’ll be talking to people who believe they’ve already gotten justice, this will come in even more useful.

Plus, with her face and name on the front page of one of the most read newspapers in this country, I would prefer to keep her close while we wait for the killer's next move.
