I’ve thought the same thing in my darkest moments, but I’ve never thought I’d hear Eva say it. The last eight years of her life have been all about catching killers no one else knew existed.

“What I think is that these people would kill no matter what, and independent of whether we’re in the picture or not,” I say and she nods slowly.

“I’ll find out all I can about Hana,” she says.

“And we have a good lead with the psychiatrists' connection. I’m hoping cross checking it all with the youth records I got today will yield something too.”

I wave the waiter over so I can pay.

“Hopefully,” she says, still leaning back in her chair, looking forlorn.

“Sojer and Brina are combing through the files back at the office,” I say and smile. “Maybe they already have something.”

She smiles too. “Stop trying to cheer me up, Novak. You’re not doing a good job.”

“Well, we knew it wouldn’t be easy going in,” I say. “But we’ll see it through to the end. Like we always do.”

“That we do,” she says and stands up, while I’m still paying for the meal.

And as I help her with her coat, I wish all we had left to do for the rest of the day was relax on the sofa. But at the same time, I know there’ll be no relaxing until we catch this latest psycho. And after we do, I’ll be ready to hand the reins over to someone else too. And I think Eva will too.
