“We’re done for today,” he says. “They both asked for lawyers.”

And that is why you don’t go arresting suspects until you’re sure, I could say to him. But he already looks on the verge of blowing up and there’s no need to add more fire to his rage.

“Did you learn anything useful before they requested their lawyers?” I ask.

“I learned that they’re a couple of pompous assholes who think their work makes them the saviors of humanity, and that’s about it.”

“Is that the word they used? Saviors?” I ask sharply. It’s pretty much straight from that letter.

“Yes,” he puffs. “Among other things. They both have huge egos and are both more like prissy divas than men. Mostly they kept saying they’re constantly persecuted for their work solely because they’re such good psychiatrists and their less successful peers are jealous.”

Now I want to speak to the two doctors even more than before, but that’s off the table for the foreseeable future now. Unless we find enough compelling evidence that they’ll want to talk. Maybe something we can use to pit them one against the other. Given how much time they spend together, I’m sure they know each other’s secrets.

But then again, this secret isn’t just a regular one. It’s cold-blooded murder we’re talking about. If one of them knew the other was committing it, he’d come forward by now. Wouldn’t he?

I tell Sojer something to that effect.

“I’m not giving up. One of them did it,” Sojer says. “What we’re doing is getting a search warrant for their homes and executing it tonight.”

He storms back out of the room with Kaja close on his heels. Brina moves to follow them, but I call her back.

“Let’s leave them to it,” I say. “There are other leads we still have to follow.”

“You think he’s wrong?” she asks in a hushed voice.

“I think we need to keep our minds open,” I say. “The only reason this killer has gone undetected for so long is because a lot of detectives in the past didn’t do that. I’m not making the same mistake.”

She nods and leads the way out of the room.

All we really have to go on is a black-clad figure seen by witnesses near the crime scenes. The CCTV Rok is going over has yet to pick up that figure. And half of the witnesses think it might be a woman. It’s too early to bulldoze over all that and focus solely on the two doctors. Besides, Sojer is already doing that.

Plus, jumping to conclusions and thinking a case is solved before it actually is has been known to cost us dearly in the past. I want this case solved fast, but I want to do it right, so I’m not ready to rush into doing the same now.
