“One hundred percent sure,” I say. “And that goes for every one of the cases I investigated and published books on. If anyone wants to question my work there are better venues to do that than this studio.”

“Perhaps, perhaps not,” Hana muses. “The public should be aware of how you work. This case has stirred up quite a panic among the people and there is a very good chance that it’s all for nothing. As in that this killer doesn’t actually exist and that you just stirred all this up to get fodder for a new book.”

“This killer is real and the threat is real too,” I say. I’m having trouble focusing on either the host or Hana, because my vision is growing blurrier and blurrier. Probably because my heart is racing so fast.

“What would you like the public to know about this killer and how to protect themselves?” the host prompts me.

I swallow heavily. “The killer is not a danger to society at large. The victims are not picked at random, but it is probably best to stay away from the riverside during the night.”

There is so much I wanted to say and had planned to say, but none of that is coming to me now.

“But do not panic, and do not live in fear if your day takes you for a walk by the river,” Hana adds. “Chances are high that there is absolutely nothing to worry about.”

The host thanks us for our time, then finishes off the segment by reiterating pretty much what Hana said.

The lights switch off and the host is saying something to me, but I don’t really hear him. I leave the desk and walk back in the direction of the small office where we waited to be called in. Dino is in there, looking almost as concerned as Mark might have been had he come. Why isn’t he here?

“We should head back to the office now,” Dino tells me and answers that question. “There’s been a development.”

In the hunt for a killer that doesn’t exist?

All sorts of intelligent, composed and eloquent replies to the fiasco the interview turned into are flooding my mind. But what good are they now?

“Don’t let any of that bother you,” Dino says. “They do it for the views.”

And I know he’s right, but I’ve never had my expertise questioned quite so viciously, and frankly, I have no idea what to make of it.

I’m even questioning all the reasons why I thought Hana might be the killer we’re looking for, even though I know they were sound.

I really should’ve thought it through before coming here tonight. They did say it would be a confrontation between Hana and me. I just didn’t know I would be the one under attack. But given her article, it was a highly probable.
