I run down the stairs and to the front door as fast as I can. Please be unlocked, please!

It is.

But as soon as I step outside, I’m blinded by the headlights of the car that comes at speed and showers me with dirt and pebbles as it stops right by the door.

For a moment, I let myself think it’s Mark coming to find me, even though the car is all wrong. And it’s that moment which steals my last chance of getting away.

A woman leaps out of the car without even turning off the engine and comes at me. I can’t see her face, not until she blocks the headlights with her body.

And then I know her. Know that angry scowl.

It’s Hana.

“Where do you think you’re going?” she asks in a breathless, rageful voice. “Where’s Anica?”

She grabs my arms and forces me back into the house, where behind me I can hear thudding footsteps coming down the stairs.

“She hit me… she hurt me…” the insane one whimpers, sounding like a lost little girl. It’s sickening to hear that kind of voice coming from a grown woman, absolutely stomach turning.

Hana shoves past me away and runs to her, grabbing hold of her shoulders. “You’re all right darling, you’re fine. Let me see…”

She glances at her injuries, stroking her hair gently, as the smell of burning fills and smoke fills the small hallways.

‘You’ll be just fine…” Hana says soothingly and then begins showering her face with sloppy kisses. “Just fine. Just fine.”

I edge towards the door and make a run for the car as soon as I’m outside.

And I almost make it. Almost.

But then a strong fist grabs hold of my hair, yanks me back and drags me back to the house.

“You’re not going anywhere,” Hana tells me.

And that’s murder I hear in her voice.

I was right about her.

But what does that matter now?

Anica has already retrieved her knife and is waiting for me in the doorway with a nauseatingly bright, expectation-filled look in her eyes.
