“Wouldn’t that be cool to find an entire hotel, ours for the orgy-ing,” Rix joked, wrapping an arm around my waist and pecking me on the cheek.

I nodded but wasn’t totally paying attention. I was still watching Jorik and Zane as they reached the dock, tied up the dinghy, then climbed the ramp that spanned the dock and land. Then they were gone, and my stomach climbed up into my throat.

“This is when comms would be nice,” Rix said, though it seemed like more of an internal thought spoken out loud than to me personally, as I didn’t feel like he was waiting for an answer. “But then that’s just one more thing to get intercepted by the enemy.”

I held my breath, waiting for the echoing crack of a gun, but it never came. I wasn’t sure how long I stood on the stern watching the ramp like it held all the answers, waiting to see them walk back out from the thick woods.

Twit-twoo.

Rix smiled and squeezed me tight. “See, Cat, nothing to be worried about.” He whistled the same tune back.

I swallowed and exhaled, which just made Rix chuckle.

“You were worried, even about Grumpy Penis?” he teased as we watched Zane and Jorik walk down the ramp and climb into the rowboat.

“If he dies, you die,” I murmured, feeling like that was the best response because it kind of was. But also, if Zane died, then Zane died, and as miserable as he was, I already knew that a piece of my heart would go with him, as it would all of them.

We watched them row back, and they sidled up next to the boat.

“Smaller than the last place, but it’ll do for the night,” Jorik said. “Hand me some supplies, Angel. Blankets and some canned food. This place isn’t nearly as well-stocked.”

Nodding, I untangled myself from Rix’s arm and went down below to gather supplies.
