Rix shrugged. “He’s not telling us something, and it’s either going to get us—or Haina—or all of us killed.”

“Should we beat it out of him?”

He shrugged again and pointed to another bullet hole. “Maybe. But let’s wait until he heals a bit before we kick the shit out of him.”

“Yeah.”

“So … Haina …” Rix’s eyes were still serious, but there was a softness to them now. “You … like … really into her?”

I grinned. “Yeah, dude. I’m really into her. Like, would kill for her. Want to be with her when and if we survive all this shit. You?”

“Yeah.” His lips twisted as he nodded.

“And you’re still okay sharing her with me?”

“Not many guys I’d be okay sharing her with, but you—and Zane if he isn’t a double agent and she doesn’t end up killing his grumpy penis—are the only two who Icouldshare a woman with. Still super fucking jealous when she’s with you and not me. Heard her coming in the bath with you at the last place, and all I wanted to do was go in there and punch you in the face.”

That had me smiling. “How do you think I felt when I found out you got to fuck her first? Consider yourself lucky I didn’t break your goddamn nose, pretty boy.”

Rix was all smiles. “At least we’re able to joke about it.”

“It’s how I’m coming to terms with the fact that the woman I’m falling for is sucking another guy’s dick.”

“Yeah, me, too. Though, not gonna lie, watching her suck your cock, as I’m fucking her from behindiscrazy hot.”

I nodded in agreement. “It is pretty cool how open she is to things.” Letting out a long exhale, I sat back on my heels, tilting my head toward the paling sky. “I know it hasn’t been long, and she’s so naive in so many ways … and maybe it’s the fact that she’s our source, but … is this love?”

“I don’t think the fact that she’s our source has anything to do with it,” Rix said plainly. “And we’ll find out if that has anything to do with it when we go through detox and get her out of our systems, so to speak, right? But I know I’m in love with her.”

I scratched my chest. “Yeah. I suppose. I think I’m in love with her, too. Do you think what Zane says about the withdrawal being worse than any kind of torture he’s ever experienced is true?”

“I do. I count five holes below the waterline. You?”

With a confirming nod, I said, “Yep. Five.”

“Now we need to figure out how to patch these fuckers up.”

“Everything we grabbed from the last place is up in the cabin. Same with the tools.”

We turned to head back up the ramp to gather what we would need to begin repairs when a roar of “What the fuck have you done?” turned our ambles into sprints.

Rix was ahead of me, and he nearly ate dirt when he tripped over a root, but I caught him at the last second, and we didn’t miss a beat before we were back to sprinting up the path toward the cabin.

Now it didn’t just sound like one bear roaring. It sounded like two.

I grabbed Rix’s shoulder just before he heaved open the door. “Do we leave them to sort it out? Kill each other or finally fuck?”

He hesitated and glanced over his shoulder at me. “If anybody’s going to die, it’ll be Grumpy Penis, and that means we die, too. So…”

“Good call.”

He opened the door.

Even though we’d both jokingly given Haina permission to kill Zane and ultimately kill us, too, if she had to kill Zane, we didn’t actually want her to go through with it—as much as Zane probably deserved it.

“You stupid, stupid bitch,” Zane hollered from the bedroom.

“You’re the stupid little bitch,” Haina retorted, just as much venom in her tone.
