It’s just the detox talking. Your skin is not on fire. Your body is not burning.

Curled up in the fetal position with scalding tears sliding down my cheeks, I clutched at my belly and moaned in agony. I squeezed my eyes shut, unable to look at anything any longer through the pain from the pressure building behind my eyes.

Jorik and Rix didn’t know this was what was coming. But I did.

I knew, and yet that still didn’t prepare me enough.

No matter how raw the memories remained, you can never prepare yourself for this kind of disturbing pain.

“We’ll die without it. We need blood. We need her.”

With the last bit of energy I had, I lifted my head up and, as hard as I could, I smashed it against the solid wood cupboard door.

Then my brain went black, and the beast went quiet.

At least for now.
