CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Haina

“Oh God, yes!” I cried out, my body arching, legs churning on the bed as the orgasm ripped through without mercy. I moved my hand down to touch the head that was between my legs, but a shock of pain rippled up through my arm and my eyes flew open.

Oh no!

I wasn’t in the cabin with Zane’s face between my thighs.

No. No. No.

With my free hand, I jerked whatever was in my arm that kept me from a full range of motion, only to scream at the pain of yanking out the needle.

Blood squirted out of the vein in my arm, and I clamped my other hand to it.

A Trima machine oscillated beside my bed. The bag was nearly full of my blood.

Woozy from my dream and the loss of blood, I gave myself a moment to collect my senses and figure out where I was and what was going on.

I closed my eyes and tuned in to my surroundings. My heart was racing, so I consciously slowed it down with deep breaths. The room smelled like bleach and a hint of seawater. Digging deeper, I could detect the faintest sound of waves crashing against a shoreline.

I wasn’t in the cabin, though.

I went deeper.

Three hearts beat nearby.

One heartbeat was slightly faster than the other two—Rix!

But all three hearts were solid and strong.

Three hearts. The three pieces of my heart.

My eyes flew open again, and that’s when I saw the mirror. I already knew that it was a two-way mirror. If I was in a compound, they had these invasive things everywhere. And I would bet my life on it that Rix, Jorik, and Zane were on the other side. This was all part of Moord’s mind games and torment.

I flew out of the bed and raced to the mirror, banging on it. “Guys! I can feel you in there. Are you okay?”

All I knew was that they were still alive. But in what condition, I had no clue. Moord could have hauled them off to be tortured as soon as we arrived at whatever compound in whatever Sector we were in and whipped them bloody. Or he could have pumped them back full of the serum, something I knew all three of them feared worse than death.

I pounded on the mirror again. “Rix! Jorik! Zane! Let me know you’re okay!”

No sound was made, but I could feel the vibrations of footsteps through the floor and knew that they were standing on the other side. Their heart rates picked up.

I placed my hands on the glass, spreading my palms wide. “I’m not lying,” I said, shaking my head as tears fell down my cheeks. “I’m not like Nereza. I swear.”

One heartbeat picked up tempo.

Zane.

It was an angry speed.

That heart got closer to the glass, so close that if there wasn’t a wall between us, I could reach out and press my hand to his chest. He was standing right there. He had to be. A hot, fat tear slid down my cheek, and I looked directly into the mirror, seeing past my own reflection and imagining the man who took up one-third of my heart on the other side. “You promised,” I whispered. His pulse picked up the tempo even more. So did the other two. Not that I could hear anything, but I could feel Rix and Jorik pressing Zane for more information on what I meant.

Swallowing past my throat made of razor blades, I pressed my forehead to the mirror, the tears still falling.

A gentle thud against the glass near my head had me sucking in a sharp breath and squeezing my eyes closed, which only made more tears fall.

“I love you … all of you,” I whispered. “And I’m so sorry.”
