“Well, the best way to learn something is by repeating it, right?” My fingers found my center again and pushed inside, while my other fingers brushed my clit and my leg spasmed.

Rix scrubbed his hand down his face and then pushed it up into his hair, making the ends of the light-brown strands stand on end. All of the guys’ hair had grown since we’d been out on the boat, but Rix’s was becoming downright unruly. I liked it though. It was a reflection of his wild, but easy-going personality.

My gaze slid down to where his cock was starting to get hard again. “Are you going to … again?” I asked, working my thumb over my clit.

He exhaled deeply and took himself in his palm. “You’re fucking killing us, baby.”

Two days later, we found another inlet to moor in, this time several miles deep and away from the rough seas of the open water. A small windstorm had picked up, and although it wasn’t overly tumultuous, it was best we sought refuge in calmer waters until it blew over.

Zane also needed time to heal.

With an entire vial of the serum in his system, we didn’t need to worry about an infection or him dying. He would heal fine, but it would still take time. Probably a quarter of the time it would take a normal human, though, so I was glad I gave him the serum even if he wasn’t.

We moored the boat in a narrow inlet, and Rix and I rowed to shore while Jorik stayed on the boat to keep watch in case there was another attack. With Zane in recovery, we couldn’t risk leaving him alone. He was a sitting duck, even with an entire vial of my blood coursing through his veins.

“I’m so excited to do laundry,” I said as Rix and I tugged the boat up the small, sandy beach and tucked it behind the low-hanging branches of a gigantic tree.

“That’s weird.” We were so close that his deep chuckle swept across the bare skin of my arms like what I could only describe as a hot tongue. “Most people hate doing laundry.”

I nibbled on my lip and grinned as I tossed my weapons, the backpack full of dirty laundry, and empty water canteens onto my back. “I’m not most people.”

“Oh, I know that.”

“I just want clean clothes and clean sheets. I also can’t wait to rub a bar of soap all over my body and shave my legs.” I turned to head into the thick woods, tuning in for a moment to see if I could detect running water. A second later I heard it, felt the vibrations. “A mile or so this way,” I said, jerking my head. “I can hear it.”

Rix simply nodded and fell in line behind me. “I’m surprised they made you shave your legs at the compound, seeing as they never let you out or meet anyone.”

“They said it was for streamlining while I swam.”

“Jeez, I don’t even need to see your eye roll to know you’re doing it.” Rix laughed as he continued on behind me.

“Oh yeah. But either way, I like how smooth my legs are when I do it, so I do it.”

“Fair enough.”

We continued on in silence for a bit, allowing the sounds of the woods to wrap around us. I no longer felt overwhelmed or any pressure behind my eyes as we hiked through nature. If anything, I felt more at ease, more relaxed as the heady scent of spring and all the pollen in the air blew past me. I could smell it all, hear it all, and feel it all, but I knew how to control it all, so now I welcomed it.

I was free.

Free to experience nature and all its beauty without having to worry about getting overwhelmed or a bloody nose from my brain threatening to explode in my skull.

I’d wanted to do nothing more than to feel the earth beneath my feet and the pine-scented breeze across my skin as I stared longingly out my bedroom window for as long as I could remember. And like hell was I going to let that dream cripple or get the best of me.

“How you doing, Cat?” Rix asked, drawing me back to the present. I hadn’t even noticed that I’d stopped walking and was just staring at up the bright green canopy of the trees and the way the sun dappled through the branches. “Do you hear something?”

I smiled more to myself than anything, then shook my head. “I hear it all, but it doesn’t bother me anymore.” I glanced back at him and smiled even wider. “Thanks in part to your help. And Jorik’s, too.”

“That’s my girl.” His grin made me buoyant, but then what made me float—like to the point where it didn’t feel like my feet were touching the ground—was when he leaned forward and smacked his lips to mine.

My eyes widened, and Rix must have realized what he’d done. “Uh … sorry, Wildcat … I, uh—”

“What was that?” My fingers touched my mouth, where I could still feel the delightful buzz and pressure of his lips.

His brows furrowed. “A kiss.”

“I … a kiss…” I touched my lips once more. “Do it again.”

Now his grin was boyish and sly. “With pleasure.” He moved in toward me, this time slower, and the way his pupils dilated caused a flutter to form in my belly and my heart rate to pick up. He angled his head and closed his eyes. So I closed my eyes, too. Then, much gentler than the first time, his lips brushed mine.
