The darn stubborn woman was trying to sleep on the floor.

“Oh hell no,” I said, walking toward her and picking her up with ease. She instantly began struggling, but I ignored her, along with her exclaimed, “Hey!”

“What on earth do you think you’re doing?” she demanded.

“My mama raised a gentleman,” I said as I sat on the bed with her still in my arms. “What kind of gentleman would I be if I let a lady sleep on the floor? That would be like smacking my mama right into her grave.”

“I don’t care what your mother taught you. Let me go.” Her voice was stern, her body stiff against mine. Her eyes met mine for a brief angry moment before looking away stubbornly. Everything in her spoke resistance, and it confused me.

“I’m getting the sense you don’t like me,” I said.

“Oh yeah, what was your first clue, genius?”

It was the last word and bratty tone that did it…that stoked the fire of challenge in me. It mixed in with the desire that had built up the minute I had taken her in my arms. Lord, she felt just like I remembered, soft flesh over lean muscle, slender and lithe like a cat. I wanted her under me again, wanted to see if I had imagined the connection we had that night. She raised her chin at me, glaring, and I smirked. The defiant impertinence made me want to tease her to teach her a lesson.

I leaned down, watching her eyes widen at my approach.

“What are you doing?” She tried to move her head back, but I simply continued my advance until she couldn’t back up anymore.

“Why are you mad at me?” I asked, keeping our lips a breath away. “If anything, I should be the one who’s upset. You left me, remember?”

“Let go of me,” she said. But she didn’t struggle anymore as her gaze quickly flicked to my lips before coming back to my eyes. Her face flushed instantly, and I could feel her breath quicken in her chest and rush out of her. I licked my lips and watched as her mouth dropped open slightly, possibly in anticipation, in welcome. She didn’t blink, as if she was caught in a spell that she couldn’t wake up from.

Oh yes. She was feeling it too.

“You know what I think?” I whispered, tempted beyond reason by the sight of her lower lip trembling. “I think you don’t dislike me half as much as you want to.”

She swallowed, and her eyes lowered again when my lips came down low enough to skim over hers. She didn’t protest the touch. Actually, her eyes slid shut, and she let out a tiny moan that traveled through my whole body, setting me on fire.

Oh yeah.

Her body trembled slightly in my arms, and I brought my hand over to graze her cheek. The touch seemed enough to snap her out of her reverie, and her hands came up to my chest.

“Don’t,” she said.

I looked down at her, at her racing heartbeat and the desire in her eyes, and knew she didn’t truly want me to stop. She wanted this too, knew she wanted to give in to the passion that had been beating at the back of our minds ever since we saw each other again.

But she wasn’t ready to admit it, and I’ll be damned if I ever force a woman in my life. And so, I let her go, raising both hands in surrender. It took her a minute to realize I had let her go, and I know I didn’t imagine the disappointment that flashed briefly over her features as she scrambled off my lap. She placed her hand over her chest as if she had something to hide. I could make a few guesses as to why. Something told me that underneath the heavy jacket she currently wore, her nipples were puckered.

I saw her eyes dip lower as well and followed her gaze to see that I had not escaped unscathed. My cock stood stark, obvious even underneath my heavy jeans.

Her eyes flew to mine, slightly panicked.

I tried not to be offended by the assertion in her gaze, but the insult struck me.

“Don’t worry, sweetheart,” I said. “I’m not a rapist.”

I picked up a pillow without another word and headed for the floor.

“What are you doing?”

I turned to smile at her. “Honey, I have a feeling you won’t touch that bed as long as I’m there, so I’ll be on the floor instead.”

And feeling her eyes on my back, I lay down and tried to shut my mind off enough to get some rest for two seconds.

It was supposedto be a simple mission.
