His face scrunched up in confusion. “Beau? I don’t work for Beau. How the hell do you know—hold on, Beau is your father?”

I nodded.

“You don’t look like him.”

“I wasn’t aware it was a requirement for children to look like their parents.”

“You also have different last names.”

I sighed. “My mother reverted back to her maiden name after she left my dad. She changed my name too.”

Monty didn’t respond to my sassy answer, and he looked thoughtful for a couple of seconds. I could see from his face that he was quickly processing all the information he had just gotten. “Hold on, if you’re Beau’s daughter then….”

“That’s right,” I said. “My father sent you to find me, and you decided to fuck me first before handing over the quarry. He called you the next morning to ask if you had found me, didn’t he?”

He looked at me for the longest time, and then he did the most unexpected thing yet. He burst out into laughter.
