Except the attraction had never died down, not even when I had been ready to lay into her for keeping my son from me all this time.

Jesus, I had a son.

I had someone I had to keep safe no matter what.

A son that had gone missing today and nearly disappeared.

“What happened today?” I asked. “You really thought it was a kidnapping?”

She hesitated and eyed me for a few seconds as though trying to gauge the seriousness of my question. Then, she nodded. “I’m not sure. I feel like I’m crazy half the time, but I feel like I’ve been followed for months, although it could just be because I’m so cautious. And then you show up, and he goes missing, so….”

“I’ve only been on your trail for a few days, not months,” I assured her. “So if you felt like you were being followed, it certainly wasn’t me.”

She looked like she was trying to evaluate whether or not to trust me, but then she volunteered, saying, “My father. He… wants me back, I guess. I saw something I shouldn’t have and…I dunno exactly what he wants with me, but he could have sent people to look for my son.”

I thought about it, then quickly dismissed the idea. “Nah. Your dad wouldn’t do something like that.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Actually, I do.” Beau might be into a lot of shady business, but even he had limits. Most of the people he dealt with were either into arms procurement or something like that. Kidnapping was way out of his comfort zone, given the kind of person he was, everything he had experienced, and how much he loved and valued his family.

But it didn’t mean Kayla’s instinct was entirely wrong. If there was one thing I had learned, it was to trust instincts because they had a way of steering you right.

“This town is not safe,” I added. I mean, I could have taken her in broad daylight, and no one would have batted an eye.

I expected her to argue, but surprisingly, she nodded and murmured, “Yeah, I agree.”

“Especially if you’ve felt like you were being followed, you need to be somewhere with people you know. People who will look out for you and Hunter.”

“I don’t know anywhere like that.”

I smiled. “I think I know a place.”
