Maybe that was it. Everything had gone south and it was time to crawl back. It had been an age since Jen had tortured herself by looking at Alison’s social media. With a shaking hand, she stabbed Alison’s name into Google.

Jesus. Her Instagram following had risen to nearly half a million, and she had posted a link to new music three days ago. So it was unlikely things weren’t going well.

What the hell did she want? She couldn’t just swan back and expect them to be best pals.

A text message notification appeared at the top of the screen.

Her stomach did a flip of relief when it wasn’t from Alison.Thank God.

Holly.

What are you up to? Finished work? Want to do something later? Xx

She fired back a reply:

I’m busy.

She didn’t have time for meaningless conversation. Holly wasn’t real. Yes, they’d been texting, but it was all part of the show. Or at least she assumed it was. She’d enjoyed their chats. But Holly only wanted to win the cash prize, get publicity. She’d made that clear.

Whatever her motive was for meeting up, Jen didn’t need it. She didn’t need anyone: letting other people in just complicated matters.

Right now, the only thing that mattered was making the business as profitable as possible.

Her phone vibrated. Holly again.

Okay. Anything I can help with? Xx

Why was she being so nice?

Three dots appeared under the last message, signalling Holly was typing again. Jen watched the screen, unable to take her eyes off the rippling ellipsis.

I can make cocktails, if that’s what you’re up to? I take direction well. Xx

She wasn’t making Jen’s mission to be alone easy. She slammed her phone onto the counter and stomped to the basement.
