‘It’s nice in here,’ Holly said, sliding her jacket off. ‘I can’t believe I’ve never been in.’

‘A hidden gem of the Southside.’ A thought hit Jen like a thunderbolt. ‘Shit, I should have ordered food. You want anything?’ Holly shook her head. ‘One min, I’ll be right back.’

‘What have you forgotten?’ Travis asked with a grin.

‘Still serving food?’

Travis bobbed his head side to side, his mouth scrunched up. ‘Chef’s off. Kev is in the kitchen tonight.’

‘Oh.’

‘Oh indeed. Remember when he burned the rice and we had to close to air the place out?’

‘How could I forget? What about chips? Surely he’s mastered chips in three years?’

‘He’ll give it a bash. But hey, if I get to end my shift early, we all win. So, what’s the deal with hot Holly?’

Jen looked over her shoulder as if Holly might have supernatural hearing, able to listen in over the blaring Natalie Imbruglia track. She was occupied on her phone; no chance of eavesdropping. ‘Nothing.’

‘But you want it to?’

It was Jen’s turn to pull a face. ‘Nah. I’m still not up for dating.’

Travis’ eyebrows shifted into a sympathetic arch. ‘Ever hear from Fuck Face?’

Jen couldn’t help but laugh. ‘You’ve always had a way with words. No. You?’ she lied. She didn’t want to talk about Alison; she’d occupied enough brain space today.

‘Not a peep. Thank God. Although, I’m sure if she wanted to play here Kev would say yes. She’s fairly come on.’ He looked guilty for praising her.

‘I’m glad she’s doing well. So, they our glasses?’ she asked, going on tiptoe to reach over the bar.

‘Patience, young grasshopper,’ he chuckled, placing them comfortably in reach. ‘You take them and I’ll bring the wine on the way to the kitchen.’

Jen gave him a wink. ‘Cheers, Travie!’

‘Manage to get some food?’ Holly asked as a glass was placed in front of her.

‘Just chips, but they’ll fill a hole.’

‘Your wine, ladies. Chips, or what might resemble chips, will be out soon.’

Holly gave Jen a look. ‘Long story,’ she replied, pouring them each a wine. She raised her glass. ‘Quack quack.’

‘Is that our thing now?’

‘Doesn’t every couple need inside jokes?’

* * *

The chips had been edible,so Kev had obviously come a long way since Jen had worked in Bar Orama. It was a good thing too, because they were onto their second bottle of wine.

‘So, then I said to the guy,’ Holly managed through choked laughter, “you’ll want that to go, then?”’

Jen howled with laughter. Holly had some funny stories. ‘Don’t, don’t, I’ll wee myself.’

Her pleading only made Holly laugh harder. She placed a hand on Jen’s. Her heart rate rocketed as her tummy did a somersault.

Kev appeared at the table and Holly pulled her hand away. Jen was sad to see it go.
