Jen’s eyes said she agreed. She chewed on her bottom lip, thinking. ‘Still, it’s super taboo.’

Holly shrugged. ‘I don’t think it should be.’

‘What did you think of?’ The words came out like a freight train, fast and unyielding. They hit Holly with such force she almost flinched.

‘Hey, you said one question,’ she scolded, keeping it light with a laugh.

Jen’s brow drooped, her eyes like a wounded puppy. ‘I did.’

‘And that’s super personal. You can’t ask a lady that,’ she replied with a knowing smile.

‘Ah, weird sex kink, eh?’ Jen joked, lightening the atmosphere.

‘Eh, no kink-shaming, please. But no. It’s just there has to be a line and you’re standing right on it.’

‘Fair enough. To be honest, though, nothing can be worse than the whole omelette thing.’

Holly’s features twisted in mock anger as she booped Jen on the nose with her finger. ‘Enough.’

Holly’s phone vibrated on the table, and this time she was happy to be saved by it. She skim-read the message. ‘Dad’s got crackers.’

‘Jesus, that’s a late one. Remind me again what the drama was?’

‘Miss Berkley, do you mean to say you’re not hanging on my every word, committing each conversation to memory?’ she scoffed.

‘In my defence, there’s been a lot to take in tonight.’

‘True,’ Holly said, her face softening to a smile. ‘Those crackers that you scoffed earlier, the cheese ones – they go in every hamper. Well, we ran out and so did the wholesaler.’

‘Uh-huh.’

‘So, we had to decide what to replace them with.’

Jen looked at the clock hanging over her breakfast table. ‘Which has taken until nearly nine p.m.?’

‘It’s a very important decision,’ Holly replied, making sure her tone matched the sincerity it deserved.

‘So, what did you settle on?’

‘Chilli.’

‘Good. Classic. Nice choice.’

‘But that’s just until Wednesday. We’ll be able to get more cheese for later in the week.’

‘Thank the stars. I was wondering how I would sleep tonight.’ Jen’s voice was perfectly flat, her sarcasm impeccable after a lifetime of practice.

‘You’re on thin ice.’ Holly was joking, of course, but it was fun to give back what Jen dished out.

‘What you going to do about it?’

‘I would like to ask my question now,’ Holly replied, each word said with quiet purpose.

Jen wriggled on the spot. ‘Shit, I’d forgotten about that.’ Three glasses of prosecco had created a permanent blush to her cheeks, but Holly could tell she was already burning hotter.

‘Right. Jen. Jenevieve. I would like to know. . .’ She held her breath, counting to five in her head, mounting the tension. She was also delaying for her own sake. Her heart fluttered, her internal monologue screaming, say it, say it!Time to take a leap of faith. ‘Do you enjoy kissing me?’

Jen’s brow knitted, a mix of surprise and contemplation. ‘Like, if you’re asking if you’re a good kisser, then, yeah. You’re brilliant.’ She shrugged.
