Jen studied the frozen pizzas, indecision rife. In the grand scheme of things, the choice meant nothing. But right now, it was all she had to focus on – the other option being a full-scale freakout.

A little over an hour ago, the highlight of her evening would be finishing the bottle of Sauvignon Blanc she’d just started. That was, until Chloe chapped at her door.

The rest was a blur.

Before Jen knew it she was taking a walk to the shop, attempting to mentally prepare herself and calm her nerves.

Her body buzzed.

Was this really happening?

Holly had messaged not long ago, asking if she’d spoken to Chloe. Then came the nondescript reply about popping round for a chat.

Jen looked at the pizzas for the thousandth time. She couldn’t go own brand, she knew that much, but settling on a base type was impossible. Personally, she liked deep-dish, but what if Holly liked a skinny Italian?

Her heart skipped.

Holly liked her. It felt like she’d won the lottery.

Jen flicked her phone out of her pocket, realising she should probably text her, just in case deliveries were nearly done.

Just at the shop – you want anything? Getting you a pizza. Guess you’ll not have eaten?

It all felt so casual. Surely there should be trumpets, a fanfare, some sort of grandiose soundtrack to all this?

Her phone buzzed. Jen furrowed her brow at Holly’s reply:

I’m also at the shop. What shop?

Jen fired back:

Morrisons. You?

She picked up a deep-dish pizza and tucked it under her arm as Holly’s reply came through:

What aisle?

Looking both ways confirmed she was alone. Was Holly here?

Pizza. You?

Wine. Meet me in the middle?

Jen slid her phone into her pocket, her gaze unmoving from the fogged-up freezer, inches from her nose. They were really going to do this. See each other for the first time, the first time truthfully as themselves, in the middle of the bloody supermarket.

Her heart hammered.

She flinched as her phone vibrated: a call incoming. Holly.

‘Hey,’ Jen said, her voice breathy.

‘Hey.’

Silence.

‘What’s up?’ Jen ventured, certain she should be moving already, but her legs had forgotten how to work.
