Holly watched Shawlands fly by from the back of an Uber. The place was hoaching. Last night’s storm had breathed new life into the suburb, the sticky hot air now bearable again, and people were back out, soaking up Lovefest activities.

She should be too, but Holly was ten minutes late for her date.

It was her own fault: she didn’t have a decent excuse. She’d been fannying about, taking her time getting ready, and before she knew it the minutes had slipped away. She wanted to look good tonight – it felt like her and Jen’s first proper date. She’d even stopped by the florists earlier and picked up a bouquet. Yellow and white roses – they’d look nice in Jen’s living room, complimenting her colour scheme.

At Jen’s request, she’d gone with the same outfit from the improv night. She’d messaged earlier, jesting about today’s plans, and hit out with:

Did you know you can see your whole leg when you sit down in that skirt?

To which Holly had simply replied:

Why do you think I wore it?

Holly read the messages Jen had sent after that, feeling slightly on edge at how un-PG they were. Not something to have within eyeshot of a stranger. She couldn’t help but grin, so she bit her bottom lip and stared out the window, hoping she didn’t look too weird.

Their date was meant to be tomorrow, but Annie had messaged this morning to say their whisky guy was ill and they’d be joining Chloe and Ryan instead. She’d been a bit sad at first, with their final date not being just the two of them, never mind the fact that Jen was hosting it. Until it was pointed out that it meant they could wrap it up as soon as Annie left and go out and do something proper.

That was way more appealing than being stuck for an hour in the company of a man she’d never met.

‘You okay in here, love?’ the driver asked, pulling in across the road from Jen’s.

‘That’s perfect, thanks.’ Holly’s stomach twisted with anticipation. Only hours had passed but it had been hellish dragging herself out of bed. She could tell by Jen’s face that she was seriously considering the financial ramifications of staying closed today. They had all the time in the world now; there was no point in acting like love-struck teenagers and shirking responsibilities. Plus, after four orgasms in twelve hours, her body could probably go a rest. Talk about one extreme to the other.

Holly knocked on Jen’s door; Annie bounded over to unlock it.

‘Sorry I’m late,’ Holly said, giving a little wave to everyone in the room.

Holly’s eyes were set firmly on Jen, who was making no effort to hide the fact she was checking her out, the blonde’s face like a kid in a candy shop. Annie guided her to the side of the counter, and retook her position next to Isaac and his camera.

She handed the flowers to Jen, whose smile was unabashed, but Holly felt a little strange having an audience. Jen kissed her on the cheek, dissolving any discomfort. ‘Thank you.’

Annie flashed them a happy but questioning look before speaking. ‘Holly, we’ve just finished Chloe and Ryan’s video, so we’ll do yours next and let you guys crack on with cocktails.’

‘Video?’ Holly asked. Was she meant to have prepared something?

Jen shot her a quick look. ‘Annie forgot to tell us we were doing a couples’ quiz.’

‘We did the hamper – we’ve got this,’ Holly said, taking her bag off and putting it under the counter. It was only then she clocked Jen’s trousers. The sexy resort shirt had been exciting enough, but team it with black waxed denim and Holly was having palpitations. ‘Nice trousers,’ she said to Jen as she leaned on the counter beside her. Having an audience really was the worst. All she wanted to do was snog her.

‘Thank you,’ Jen replied, giving her bum a little wiggle. ‘I knew you were bringing your A-game, so I thought I’d better make an effort.’

‘Appreciated.’

‘Do I sense a change in circumstances?’ Annie asked, her focus remaining on the screen as Isaac set up the shot.

‘Hmm?’ Jen asked, her hands fiddling with the edge of the counter.

Annie pursed her lips, a smile pulling at their edges. ‘Hmm, yourself.’

Jen beamed bright red. Holly chose to divert her attention to Chloe. It was more fun to keep people guessing than answer Annie outright. ‘So, did you guys enjoy your hamper last night?’

‘Oh my God,’ Chloe gushed, ‘that Brie is amaaazing.’

‘And the chilli crackers were ace too,’ Ryan added, gesturing with his finger and thumb like a chef.

‘Your dad will be relieved to hear that,’ Jen said to Holly with a playful grin.
