Eyes narrowing, he gritted his teeth. Not her too.

She shrugged. “Whatever the reason, I’m glad you’re back. I have to run to town, and I doubt Jessica would be interested in tagging along with me.” She shot a pointed look at the way they continued to hold on to one another. “Seems you two could use some time to talk about what you want to do anyway.”

Ian released Jessica at the same moment she pulled away. She folded her arms over her stomach and rubbed her upper arms. A pretty rose color filled her cheeks. Great, his mother was embarrassing her now, too. He shoved his hands in his pockets and rocked back on his heels.

His mother’s smile widened. “I’ll see you both around dinner?”

Both of them nodded as she wandered off. The moment she was out of earshot, he faced Jessica. “I’m sorry about that. Don’t listen to anything my family says.” The last thing he needed was to have her feeling uncomfortable around him because she thought he was obsessed with her. Teasing was one thing. Filling her head with lies was a whole different story.

Jessica shrugged. “It’s fine. Your mom is sweet.” Her gaze didn’t leave his face. Instead, she tilted her head to the side. “So, what are we going to do next?”

His features brightened—well, as much as they could, and he thumbed over his shoulder. “Let’s take a walk.”
