His focus dropped to her mouth, and the yearning to press his mouth to those delicate lips reared its ugly head. His heart pounded against his rib cage. Just a few inches of energized air hung between them. He could practically hear it humming. She had to feel it too. There was no way this was one-sided.

“Ian,” she whispered. Her warm breath grazed his cheek.

“Yeah?”

“Can I kiss you?”

His impulse control was shot. The flood gates had been opened. Ian covered her mouth with his, exploring and memorizing every detail, every taste, every smell. He pulled her closer as the flame in his stomach grew hotter.

She moaned softly, and her hands came up to his hair. Her kiss held a note of desperation. But whether it was for him or because of their precarious situation, he couldn’t tell. And he didn’t care. He’d finally been able to taste her, hold her.

Her kiss was more than he’d ever imagined it could be. He hadn’t experienced anything like it. The way she opened up to him was indescribable. He was drowning in ecstasy and all from a kiss. If he died at this moment, he’d do so happily.

Someone cleared their throat behind him. Jessica jumped back and scooted a few inches from him, her hand coming to her mouth. Ian glanced toward the intruder.

Brock stared at the two of them with steel eyes. “Sean’s ready. We need to get going before it gets much later.” He turned on his heel and strode out of the room.

Jessica let out an uncomfortable laugh. “I guess I didn’t win him all the way over yet.”

Ian sliced his hand through the air, grinning. “He’s just jealous.”

Her nose, cheeks, and mouth were a deep rosy color. Her eyes looked more vibrant than they had all day. The hand she held to her face had dipped to her neck. She still didn’t meet his eyes. “You must think I’m a terrible person.”

Ian moved closer to her. “What? Of course not. Why would you say a ridiculous thing like that?”

Jessica faced him, lifting a shoulder. “Tucker… this whole situation. Starting a relationship like this doesn’t seem healthy.”

He placed a hand against her cheek. She leaned into it, placing her hand over his. “Just because we kissed doesn’t mean you’re a terrible person. I’ve felt drawn to you for a long time. Maybe I’m the terrible person for sitting back and watching you date that creep for so long instead of asking you out.”

A small smile tugged at her lips. “I always thought you were cute, a little quiet, but still cute.”

He leaned down and brushed his lips against hers once more.

“Ian. Now!” Brock’s holler from the other room caused them both to jump.

Ian rolled his eyes. “We’recoming.” He got to his feet and held out his hand.

Her fingers laced through his, and she leaned her head against his shoulder.

“Are you feeling any better? Maybe we should do this another day.”

“I’m fine. I’d rather get this out of the way so I don’t have to worry about doing it later.”

Ian squeezed her hand, resting his head on hers. “You don’t have to do it at all if you don’t want to. I could buy you some more clothes.”

She shook her head. “Ian.” Her tone was laced with a warning, reminding him of how stubborn she was when it came to doing things on her own. Jessica let out a sigh. “I’ll just get a few things. Then we can come back here and maybe go for a walk or watch a movie.”

“I think that sounds like a great idea.”

They arrived in town, and Jessica directed Sean toward her apartment complex. Brock sat in the front, his sour attitude still hanging over him like a rain cloud. They drove past the building, all four of them keeping a look out for anyone who didn’t look like they belonged. As promised, Sean found parking a few blocks from the building, and the four of them got out of the truck.

Sean and Brock walked in front of Ian and Jessica. She’d pulled her hair into a cowboy hat that matched her slightly baggy overalls. Cowboy boots completed her “disguise”—she looked just like one of the guys.

When they got to the building, Sean stopped them. “What floor are you on?”

“Third.”
