Sarah clears her throat before saying, “I’m so sorry, Leia. You’ve been sad lately. I just wanted to help, love. Trust me on this.” She gives me a small smile before leaving. She grabs Taya’s hand, who gives me a look of reassurance before they both leave the room. I’m left with Nick again. I was trying hard to avoid talking to him for a while now. But it seems...life likes to play tricks on you.

“Nick...you waited three weeks to finally talk about this,” I whisper. I’m not sure if I can trust anything he has to say. But it’s Nick. Surely, he’d never hurt me.

That’s what you thought before he cheated on you.

“You were avoiding me. What did you want me to do?”

He has a point there. I figured after I told Jake how I felt, things would’ve changed. But it didn’t.

“What did you want to tell me?”

I just need to avoid the topic of Jake altogether. But I don’t think I can. He clears his throat and swallows.

Suddenly, everything I thought about Jake Larson had changed.

JAKE

The universe is a funny place. The way it can screw you in one day is mind-boggling.

I could say I’m confused, but that would be an understatement. I walked away from Leia three weeks ago because Nick fucked with my head. And I can’t believe I let him. But I also don’t know what to believe anymore. There’s a possibility that Nick was right.

“Dude, that Nick guy is a loser. You’re really gonna listen to that bullshit?”

“I know I shouldn’t, but...I don’t know, dude. Why doyouthink she ran out of his room the other night naked?” The memory has me grinding my teeth.

“Who knows? But going to the worst-case scenario isn’t a good idea. We all know Nick’s a liar. Let’s not make what he says credible.”

“You’re right, I’m being stupid.”

He chuckles, chugging down more beer. “Yeah, dude. You are,” he admits. “Have you eventriedtalking to her about it?”

No comment. He already knows this answer to this, rolling his eyes. I can’t justtalkto her about it. What if she just affirms what he says? That’ll only make me more pissed. What’s more, what if she gets mad that I would even believe what that prick says? I don’t see a win either way.

This mental gymnastics is annoying as hell.

“I don’t even think that’s an option. Something tells me I won’t like the answer.”

“Look, dude—”

A banging on the front door has both of us turning our heads. What the hell? Who’s banging on the door at night? I give Hunter a confused look before getting up.

The banging suddenly stops, and a feminine voice replaces it.

“Jake, can you open the door, please?”

I immediately freeze when I hear Leia’s voice on the verge of breaking. Has she been crying? I rush over and open the door to find a tear-ridden Leia. She’s sniffling, a sad look on her face.

“Leia? Are you okay, doll?”

She continues staring at me as she wipes at her eyes. “I don’t know,” she whispers, her voice breaking. It fucking sucks to see her like this. Her eyes suddenly go to Hunter, who’s equally confused. “Hunter, can you give us a minute?”

I swallow in anticipation. Something is completely off here.

“Leia—”

“Hunter, it’s cool, dude. Give us a minute,” I say, eyes not leaving her. She averts her gaze as she walks past me into our frat. Clearing my throat, I close the door.

Hunter nods before hopping off the couch and disappearing upstairs. Leia and I are alone. Things don’t tend to end well when we’re like this. She’s staring at me again as she settles onto our couch. I give her a small smile, but she looks away.
