JAKE

Everything isnotfalling into place.

We were supposed to come to the beach and chill before fall training begins in a few weeks. Once school starts back up, there is going to be no time for our regular booze-filled nights. Coach got on us last summer after the track girls threw their rave and we showed up to practice the next day, hungover. Because of that, he limited us to one beer every few months. Whatever. Not going to stop us from having more parties. This is Rubenstein, party college. Where would we be without the athletes throwing parties?

But things also aren’t falling into place because I was not expecting to run into the gorgeous Leia. Fuck, she can’t be real. It’s like watching a fucking dove in action.

“The longer you watch, the better chance those chicks will call the cops.” Hunter is the most annoying prick I know.

“So you’re gonna bust my chops for the rest of your life?”

He grabs a beer from the cooler before throwing me one. “Stop being a creep and maybe I won’t have to. Let it go. That chick won’t go for you. Last summer proved that.”

Shaking my head, I drink my beer, remembering what happened last summer. Keg parties, making out, and being an ass. All themes I seemingly succeeded at.

So here’s the thing: The track girls had a party. The party was wild, and a humping session followed it. And when I got drunk, I found Leia...and thatgorgeousass of hers. We danced, and she smelled nice. So I got carried away. One thing led to another...I was an ass, and now she hates me.Shit,I don’t even blame her.

“And he’s still being a creep.”

I roll my eyes at Hunter and take another swig. We drove my Jeep down to the sand, and now we’re chillin’.

The girls playing volleyball left us when they got annoyed no one was paying attention to them. Everyone’s fixed on the track girls partying and playing games at the beach. I know my guys and I are.

“Bro, we gotta get in on that,” Brock says, throwing his bottle into the sand. I just sit back and watch the whole scene play out. I can’t take my eyes off her.

“Nah, they’re enjoying themselves,” Hunter slurs. I roll my eyes. I have no idea why he’s pretending like he’s not into any of those girls. He literally couldn’t stop talking about Leia’s brunette friend last summer.

“Dude, are you kidding? Look at those girls. Especially the one with the bikini.” Brock points. I follow his gaze, and I know exactly who he’s talking about. And just like that, I glare at him, annoyed. He gives me a smug grin. “What?” he asks, feigning innocence.

“You’re not going after her,” I say simply. He chuckles.

“Why not? She’s hot.” I roll my eyes and take another swig of my beer. The damn comedian.

“I know. But she’s also got substance. Something you don’t have.”

My teammates start laughing as I continue to watch her as she dances. I hear a whistle coming from my teammates. I look to Hunter, who nods toward the stairs. And it’s my worst nightmare.Cue the cross-country boys, led by Nick. All dancing and throwing around a football. Are they football players or track runners?

Nick turns around and looks at the girls.

“Oh, Leia! I know you’re over there!”

The girls all squeal as the girl I have been drooling over nearly blushes. I continue to watch everything as it plays out. It’s like a horror movie.

“I’ve missed you, babe,” he says, holding his arms out.

Goddammit, he’s a muscular son of a bitch. She looks to her friends, and they all nod. She runs over to him and jumps into his arms, hugging him. For fuck’s sake, this is painful to watch.

The girls all laugh and run toward the water. She pulls back, says something to him, and he hugs her again. Once he turns toward his guys, shouting his victory—‘causeman, was it a victory—she sees me...and her entire face falls. And my heart can’t help but fall too. I wave to her. And then she waves at me as he carries her away toward the guys who were throwing around the ball. This is agony.
