“Gotcha,” says Hunter, not paying attention, watching game tape. Off to the bar I go.

I’ve never seen the bar so empty on a Friday night. Especially not on the first day of classes. Everyone usually hangs out at the bar for an hour or so and then heads to some party on Greek Row. But tonight, it’s practically empty. I approach the bartender and hand him a $20 bill.

“A case of Miller Lite, Tony,” I say.

He nods and takes the bill before grabbing a case from the fridge. It’s a quick turn of the head to leave. And there she is, at the bar, drinking water.

Of course she is, as perfect and dedicated as she is. But I still can’t get over how gorgeous she is, oblivious to the world around her and the guys trying to get her attention. The urge to bust all of their teeth in is strong. Not again, Larson. Because she’s ignoring every one of them.

“Leia Walton, our beautiful freshman here at Rubenstein.”

She turns around at the sound of my voice, almost as if she were expecting it.

“Jake Larson, senior, hockey hotshot at Rubenstein. Nice to see you again.” The last time, it didn’t end too well. We opted to be friends. As hard as it is, I’ll be her fucking friend.

“This seat taken?”

“Feel free,” she says as she takes a long sip of water.

“How are you liking the campus so far?”

“I love it. Always loved it, ever since I came here for track camp. And it’s nice to have the beach right across the way.”

“Sure. Are people being nice to you?”They better...

“So far, yes. But Ididget a little freaked out when a group of guys offered to help me move some stuff in yesterday. It was nice, but I wasn’t expecting that kind of attention.” So she finally moved in. And didn’t ask me to help. For some reason, that sort of stings.

“Are you kidding? With how you look?”

She gives me a confused look before laughing it off.

“You’re really...something. You know that? The flirting never stops with you.” And I guarantee it never will.

“You could say that.” But I can’t get over how checked-out she seems. She’s a pro at avoiding eye contact. “Are you sure you’re okay?” She seems hesitant at first.

My attention is instantly brought to her lips as she bites into the corners nervously. The same lips I’ve been craving.Divert your attention elsewhere.

“Just...I’m really tired today after these classes. One of my professors has already assigned us a project that’s due by this Friday.”

“Dang, I’m sorry.” I almost let it go, but a project for the first week? “Wait, already?”

“Yep. On top of that, constant training with my team, you know?”

“Oh, I should know better than anyone the stress. My team is counting on me for this season, but so are my professors. Senior year sucks,” I chuckle.

“The perks of being athletes, huh?”

It’s amazing how much we have in common in that regard. Two peas in a pod.

“Absolutely.”

For a moment, I just stare at her. And she returns it...willingly. With that smile I’ve been looking forward to for two goddamn weeks.Jeez, what the fuck is wrong with me?

“So...what’s your major?”

“Business.”

“Figures.”
