There wasa time I wouldn’t have dreamed of knocking at Finch’s. I always just let myself in, but that doesn’t seem right now. I know the key code, but I still wait for us to be buzzed, trying not to let Ali notice how I’m hopping from one foot to another in my black hi-tops.Don’t wring your hands, Max. You can do this.

“Alison!” Cassy’s face lights up when she sees Ali walk in behind me. She grasps her close and wraps her arms around her in a hug that almost knocks the wind from me too with how excited she is. When she eventually lets Ali go, who’s green eyes are already glossy with how happy she is to feel so accepted by my baby sister. Cassy’s eyes find mine and her smile widens even more as she pushes a kiss to my cheek.

“I’m so happy you’re here,” she tells me quietly so- only I can hear. I squeeze her shoulders because I’m so pleased I made myself come here. Even the phone call was hard, but this is progress. These are the three people I love the most in the world under one roof and I need to make myself okay with that.

Four if you include that beautiful baby growing in Ali’s belly.

“Now I’m curious,” Cassy mumbles not to anyone in particular but she has that familiar searching gaze my sister often has on her pretty face.

“Princess, what time is Max getting here? I’ve put the wine in the fridge and some orange juice, I’m now about to grab a shower if I can tempt you to join me for the second time today?”

There’s music playing in here, there always is. I think it’sRoyal Bloodbut I didn’t miss a word of what my best friend just shouted through to my sister from the bedroom. I try not to empty the contents of my stomach onto the kitchen floor.Did he seriously just say that?My eyes widen and my eyebrows fly up unconsciously. Cassy sees, and her cheeks flush pink, she looks absolutely fucking mortified. This is not a good start.

“Erm, Ky,” she shouts through, looking as if she wouldn’t mind the kitchen floor opening her up and swallowing her whole.

Ky? Who the fuck is Ky?

“What?” he shouts back before he becomes visible. Strutting out of the bedroom which is off of their open-plan living area. With a giant Cheshire cat style shit eating grin covering his cheeks.

Stark bollock naked.

The room is silent, I swear even the music has paused as Finch looks up. I’m surprised he doesn’t stroke his cock.

Then his eyes fall on me, cover in terror.

“Oh fuck.”

I mean seeing Kyle Finch naked is not new to me. We’ve toured together for too many years to worry about boundaries. But seeing him naked and searching for my sister. That’s a new one for me.

“Oh fuck, man. Fuck, I’m sorry,” he struggles.

“Ky?” Cassy pleads with him again.

“What?” he asks, clearly panicked. Kyle Finch is the king of cool, panic isn’t normally on his radar and if I didn’t find this scene so disturbing I would probably laugh.

Cassy makes an over the top shooing gesture for him to go back in the bedroom and as if a cog is churning in his brain and I can almost see the light bulb appear next to his head and he realises he’s still fucking naked he drops his hands to cover what is left of his modesty and runs back into the bedroom.

Cassy looks at me and then Ali and then back at me and then she finds the floor underneath her bare feet particularly interesting.

“Sorry,” she whispers, obviously devastated. I mean your big brother seeing your boyfriend asking you if you want to join him in the shower is bad enough. Worse when it’s his best friend who you are sort of talking too and sort of not because you’re so confused by the whole situation.

Ali’s laugh breaks the uncomfortable silence between us. “Sorry, guys, I know I shouldn’t find this as funny as I do,” she admits through giggles.

“I’m glad someone is,” I mumble, but I can feel the tension draining a little from just hearing Ali’s voice, from knowing she’s close to me. My shoulders sag.

“Well, it’s safe to say Kyle certainly won’t be finding it funny.” Cassy stifles a laugh and letting her sweet smile cover her own cheeks before turning her attention to Ali, to distract from the awkwardness as well as anything else, I’m sure.

“Alison! Max didn’t say you were coming? How have you been? We’ve not caught up for so long!”

“I know, Cassy. I’m sorry it’s been a bit hectic,” Ali admits, she looks a little lost, I think she has missed my sister as much as she missed me. They did grow close on the last tour.

“Are you still working with the same band? Failed Obsessions is it?”

Ali nods, smiling at her friend.

“And it’s all going, okay?” Cassy asks.

“Yeah, I like it, they’re young, a bit clueless, a bit spunky but it’s a lot of fun. We just had a few dates in Europe which was particularly eventful.”
