“Was it at your house?”

“No, my mother would never allow a boy in my bedroom! It was at his auntie’s house.”

“His Aunt’s house?”

“Yeah, he had a massive family. Loads of big family parties. Lots of places for stupid teenagers to sneak off to. You know the types.”

He nods but he doesn’t look as if he does. I know his upbringing was so different from my own. Mine wasn’t perfect. Far from it, but at least I knew my real family.

“And was it worth sneaking away from his family to get your rocks off with their teenage nephew?”

“Is it ever when you’re sixteen?”

He laughs, shrugs his shoulders. “No, probably not.”

“What about you then, stud?”

He laughs. “Never been called that before.”

“Liar.”

“Okay, never been called that name by you before.”

I laugh at him. “But…”

But what?” He feigns ignorance but his smile is so light it’s hurting my chest.

“But tell me your story.”

“Which one? You know all of my stories.” He moves a hand from my foot and waves it aimlessly in the air.

“I don’t know about your first time.”

“Hmm. Well to be honest I don’t think many people know that story.”

“Why’s that?” I tip my head to the side as I study the man in front of me.

“Maybe because it’s not something really worth telling. I’m not sure it’s something I’m exactly proud of.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning it’s probably something I’d like to forget.” He looks at the floor before moving his hands back to my foot and holding it. I reach a hand down to grasp his hand in mine. His chin lifts as he looks back at me. His hazel eyes huge. Mouth slightly open. A nervous smile as I pull him up to sit with me on the couch. He shifts himself so he’s next to me, and I keep his hand in mine as he leans back onto the sofa, and I tuck myself into his shoulder. He kisses the top of my head.

“How old were you?” I ask him quietly.

He kisses my head again softly. His voice is quieter now.

“Thirteen.”

I try not to gasp, to show any shock.

“Well, you know we grew up in care?”

I nod.

“You think you’re older than you are. You think you’re bigger, better, wiser. Harder than you are.”

My heart sinks. Oh god. Oh, please don’t say someone… I grip his hand in mine a little tighter.
