I’m notsure my eyes will ever dry again as I finally gather the strength to drag myself away from Ali’s side as I walk back into the waiting room outside.

Expecting to find just Finch and maybe Em, I’m surprised when the first person who rushes towards me is my baby sister. Dressed in scrubs, hair scraped up in a bun and barely a scrap of makeup on, Cassy’s smile is huge as she wraps her arms around my shoulders.

“Maxxie?” she asks tentatively. The hospital she’s a student nurse at isn’t this one but she’s obviously come straight from her shift.

“Cass, I’m a dad!”

I smile. Not my Max Baines stage-show smile, the one that melts the pants off women while I’m on stage but the real one. The one that only comes over my face due to pure happiness. Absolute ecstasy.

“Oh, Maxxie.” She hugs me tighter and the tears that were hot in my eyes are there again, and as she pulls away from me, I notice the tears covering her own cheeks.

“Can I see them?”

“Of course,” I nod eagerly as Cassy almost screeches as she runs off towards the door I just came out of. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anyone walk so fast in all of my life.

I look around the waiting room and my eyes fall on Finch. My curly haired, stupidly tall, stupidly loyal best friend. He saunters towards me, smile wild on his face.

“Congratulation’s man!” he says as he grabs my hand to shake before pulling me into a hug. I look around the room, checking that Cassy’s out of ear shot.

“Yes, Finch.” He looks at me, confused as all hell as to what I’m agreeing too.

“You’ve tried to ask me twice now if you can have my blessing to marry my little sister, and the answer is fuck yes, Kyle Finch.”

“How did you know that’s what I wanted to ask?”

“I’ve known you since you were a kid, Kyle. You get that pensive look in your eye when you’re uncertain, I’m certain though. Certain you’ll love her completely, worship her, treat her like a fucking queen for her whole life.”

His smile hit his cheeks, as he hugs me again, slapping me on the back as he thanks me.

“Guess this really makes us brothers,” I tell him.

“She’s got to say yes yet, mate.” He laughs.

“True. Now you want to meet your newest god child?”

“Fuck yeah, I do!” Finch replies as we walk off quickly to Ali’s door. Where I know my whole world is behind that hospital door. I hesitate at the door. Take a deep breath as I push open the door. Cassy’s sitting on the end of Ali’s bed with tears in both of their eyes.

My girl’s smile is wide as I walk back into the room with Finch. I just can’t stop fucking crying as my eyes prickle again.

“I was waiting for you until I did the official formal introductions.” Ali smiles. Her eyes rimmed in black, she looks so tired but she’s amazing. She really is so resilient as she smiles like she didn’t just push a baby out.

“So, I finally get to say hello to my niece!” Cassy says in an excited whisper. Ali’s gorgeous greens find mine and we both smirk.

Cassy coo’s again before I correct her.

“Nephew.”

She looks to me and back to Ali, her brow furrowed with a deep confusion, and I just smile. That mad smile as I look at the woman, I want to give my all to—Ali, my heart and my soul, and then to my sister and my best friend. There’s no other people in the world that I’d want to be here in this room meeting our gorgeous baby. Well, except my mum.

I walk towards the bed, sit down on the side of the bed as Ali passes the bundle of grey blankets to me. I look down. His sweet face, eyes closed, and perfect soft lips pursed. My entire world flips on its axis. My son. My boy.

My world revolves around him.

Ali speaks up because I’m welling up again, “Hi Auntie Cassy and Uncle Kyle.” she nods at him, and his eyes are wide and I’m sure I notice a tear forming.

“Meet Roman Max Thomas Baines.”

Tears spill down Cassy’s cheeks as she looks towards me, busy admiring my family. All four of them.

“You still named him after Mum,” she mumbles.

“Sure did, sis.”
