Remy threw up his hands. “I think you can take it from here, Ted. I’m out.”

Journey watched him leave the room without a backward glance.

Ted leaned closer to Laz. “Your instincts have always been on point. Give me something here, man. Do you think the shooting had something to do with Nazir? Or do you think this was about you?”

Laz shook his head back and forth against the pillow and sighed. “Ted, I wish I knew. I’ve got nothing. I just need you guys to find whoever did this, and I suggest you find them before I do. Because if I find them first, I can’t guarantee anything will be left for you.”

“Noted. Take care, my friend. I’ll be in touch,” the detective said before leaving.

“Have you lost your mind?” Journey ground out, shocked at what he’d said to Ted. “Are you trying to end up in jail?”

Laz didn’t speak, only stared at her.

“Oh, so you’re giving me the silent treatment. Real mature, Laz. The last time you ended up in jail, I told you that I wouldn’t put up with that crap. But if you keep saying stupid stuff like you just didto a cop, that’s exactly what will happen. There won’t be a damn thing I can do to get you off this time. And I won’t stick around to try.”

He bolted upright, pain twisting his features as fury radiated in his beautiful eyes. They looked lethal enough to kill.

“You have a lot of nerve to stand there and threaten to leave me. You haven’t been present in this marriage or this family in months, and don’t even get me started about today. You weren’t here when I needed you, Journey. Whenour daughterneeded you. So back the hell off!”

Damn. Me and my big mouth.

What had she been thinking to bring up his jail time? It had happened shortly before they were married and was part of the reason why he left the police force. It was a long time ago, and Laz wasn’t that man anymore.

Yes, he was wrong in threatening to retaliate against the people who shot at him, but she shouldn’t have said anything. He’d been through hell today and was emotionally and physically hurt. Her words had just made everything worse.

The door burst open, and Parker and the nurse returned.

“Okay, I don’t know what’s happening in here, but Mr. Dimas, I’m going to need you to calm down. Your heart rate is—”

“Get my discharge papers,” Laz interrupted her. He put his legs over the side of the bed. “I’m out of here.”

“Laz, babe, be mad at me all you want, but please don’t leave until they—”

Looking past Journey, he made eye contact with the nurse, who stood with her mouth gaping open.

“Get the damn papers,” he growled with more force than necessary. “Or I’m leaving without signing them.”

The nurse looked at Journey for confirmation, but Journey just shrugged. She thought leaving was a dumb idea, but Laz was the type of man who did whatever he wanted. Consequences be damned.

She feared for his health but also for their relationship. If the last few minutes were any indication, it might be too late for their marriage.

She shook that last thought free.

He could walk out of the hospital—but she would fight like hell before she let him walk away from their marriage.
