Tears filled her eyes and his gut twisted.

“Will you ever be able to forgive me?” she asked in a small voice, the bravado from moments ago gone. “Just tell me what it will take. I can’t lose you.”

Laz stood and reached for her. She hurried forward and leaned into his good side, and he tightened his arm around her waist.

“You willneverlose me,” he said quietly and kissed her. “I love you too damn much.”

She sniffed and leaned back to look at him. “I love you too, and I can’t tell you enough how sorry I am. I hate myself for not being there when you and Ari needed me.”

Laz pulled her back against him. “I know.” He had known that yesterday, but he’d been overwhelmed with anger. “I don’t want you to quit your job. This city and the legal system need you too much.”

She didn’t respond but tightened her arms around his waist and laid her head on his chest. They stood that way until exhaustion started to get the best of him. He knew they probably needed to talk more. So instead of suggesting they go to bed, he reclaimed his seat and encouraged her to straddle him.

Caressing her cheek with the pad of his thumb, Laz studied her now that she was sitting on his lap. Love twinkled in the depths of her pretty brown eyes, and it felt as if his heart would burst with the love that he had for this woman. Going forward, nothing or no one would ever keep them apart.

“I’m glad you’re here.” He pushed some of the loose strands of her hair out of her face and let the back of his hand glide over her jawline. “I know we have to figure out how to make us work, but it’s not just on you. I’ll do my best to be more patient, and we’ll determine how to spend more time together without you leaving a job you love.”

He punctuated his words with a tender kiss on her kissable lips. He was an idiot the way he’d been behaving lately.

“It’s probably been hard to tell, but you’re everything to me,” he said. “I’m sorry for how I’ve treated you these last few days. No matter what, I will always love you, Jay, and I’m committed to our marriage.”

A tremulous smile tilted the corners of her mouth, and she cupped his face between her soft hands. “Me too,” she said, staring into his eyes.

The longer they sat there watching each other, the faster his heart pounded, and his body hummed with need. He might’ve been exhausted, but Journey had the power to energize him with her nearness. And at this moment, he planned to forget everything else and give his wife his full attention.

He slid his good arm around her waist and pulled her as close to his body as his injured arm, confined to the sling, would allow. Lowering his head, Laz sucked on her top lip, then her lower one, as he held her. He took his time savoring her sweetness while the tender massage of her mouth against his sent currents of desire charging through his body.

He adored this woman. She was so much more than just his wife. She was his best friend. She was his heart.

What the hell had he been thinking when he told her he needed space? There was no way he would’ve survived more than twenty-four hours without seeing and touching her. She wasitfor him. He couldn’t imagine walking through life with anyone else.

Journey moaned into his mouth as her arms went around his neck, careful of his bandages. The kiss deepened as her body melted against him and their tongues tangled to a familiar rhythm. She tasted like tequila with a hint of mint, and he was here for it. That and the intoxicating scent of her perfume had him hard as granite and ready for their bodies to be joined as one.

“I’ve missed you,” he said against her lips before lifting his head.

It sounded a little stupid when he said it out loud, especially since he’d seen her earlier that morning, but it was true. He missed this. He missed having her hugged up against him while sitting on his lap. That was something she often did, climbing on top of him, and he would hold her close.

The position always reminded him of the first time they ever made love…in the tiny kitchen of his one-bedroom apartment.

It seemed like a lifetime ago, but that night they gave themselves completely to each other, after a little debate, of course. His body heated with the memory and how glad he’d been when she had shown up on his doorstep to seduce him.

Laz peppered kisses along the collar of her scented neck. “I hate when we fight.”

He ran his hand down the side of her body and slid it beneath the tail of her dress, then froze when he felt her bare ass. Lifting his head, he narrowed his eyes at her.

“Jay, don’t tell me you’ve been walking around town without panties on under this short-ass dress.”

A slow, wicked grin spread across her luscious mouth. “I hate when we fight, too,” she said evasively, running the pad of her thumb across his bottom lip. “But I’m not wearing panties because I came prepared for us to make up.”
