ChapterTwenty-Four

It had been four days since the meeting at Supreme Security and four days of still not knowing for sure who was behind the threats. Laz was trying to focus on the here and now, but his mind kept wandering.

Usually, he looked forward to theSave Our Boysannual fundraiser. It was a great cause, and the organization had helped tens of thousands of young men reach their full potential. But tonight, as he stood at the bar with Hamilton and Kenton in a spectacularly decorated ballroom, it was hard to totally enjoy the evening. There was still someone out there who was a threat to his family.

He had finally told Ted about the threats and handed over everything they’d learned about the situation, including the information Journey and her team dug up on Councilwoman Tamar Warner. The woman had started from humble beginnings but worked her way through college and law school.

They learned that in the last three years, Tamar’s income had doubled. It looked like she was putting her law degree to use. In addition to being a city councilwoman, she made money consulting for nonprofits. Recently, she’d started spending more money than it appeared she made by buying expensive real estate, cars, and taking luxurious trips.

She was definitely a person of interest when it came to threatening Journey and targeting him. The problem was, she was nowhere to be found. Law enforcement had issued an APB—all-points bulletin—but so far, no one had seen her. There had also been no more threats to Journey.

Still, Laz had suggested they lay low and skip the event. He wasn’t one for hiding out, but when it came to Journey’s safety, he didn’t like taking risks. But considering how sexy she looked in the yellow—or as she referred to the color, daffodil—dress, he liked the idea of showing her off.

She was standing near their table with Dakota and Zenobia. There might’ve been beautiful women in attendance and dressed to impress, but none were as gorgeous as his woman.

The evening gown flowed over Journey’s fit body like liquid gold. Laz wasn’t sure when she had purchased the dress, but he was glad she had. The silky, halter-necked garment crisscrossed over her full breasts, and the wide straps hung down the middle of her bare back.

Besides the dynamic color and the way it draped over her curvy body, what really sold the outfit was the crazy-high split that went up past her thigh. Her long shapely leg was on full display, along with a pair of sexy-ass rhinestone shoes. The heels were at least four inches tall, with an ankle strap that enhanced her sexiness.

“I’ll be back,” Laz said to the guys. Several of his friends were in attendance, not only because they usually supported the organization but also because Laz still wanted someone watching his and Journey’s back.

Usually, Supreme Security was the contracted security firm for the event, but this year, the organizers had gone with another company, which surprised Laz. He’d been active with the organization for years, and in doing so, the organizers always used Supreme. Not this year, though, supposedly because of budget cuts. There were only a couple of security guards present.

Journey smiled when she noticed Laz approaching, and it seemed like the whole room brightened. He was one lucky bastard, and each day he spent with her made him much more grateful.

“Hey there,” she said.

“Hey, yourself, beautiful.” Laz placed a kiss against her lips, not caring if some of her lipstick came off. “I just wanted to come over and see how you were doing.”

She grinned at him. “That should be my line, considering you’re still banged up. No pun intended.”

Laz laughed. A week ago, he couldn’t laugh at the situation, but a lot had happened in the past week. They still hadn’t gotten the person behind the hit on him, but at least they’d gotten the shooters off the street and Nazir’s murderer.

And Laz and Journey’s relationship was stronger than it had been in a long time. They still had no answers regarding the next steps with Journey’s career, but he had no doubt they’d figure it out. They had to because he was never walking away from her, and he’d fight like hell to keep her from ever leaving him.

She straightened his bowtie. “I should’ve known you would ditch your tuxedo jacket,” she said. “Actually, I thought the tie would’ve been gone by now, too.”

Laz smiled at her. “I kept the tie on for you. I know how much you like it,” he crooned and leaned in to nuzzle her neck, just behind her ear. It was bad enough that he had to wear a suit for work. Having to wear one tonight was a pain, especially with the damn sling. He had rid himself of the jacket a few minutes ago, leaving him in a crisp white shirt and black tuxedo pants.

“Well, you still look extremely handsome. I can’t wait to get to our room where I can strip you out of your clothes,” she said, a sensual sparkle in her eyes and a sinister smirk on her red lips.

Laz laughed. “You got everyone believing you’re this sweet little prosecutor when actually, you’re a vixen in sheep’s clothing. Well, except for tonight. Tonight, you could give a dominatrix a run for her money. Baby, you look amazing in this dress, and I can’t wait to get you out of it. How about we write the organization a fat check and get out of here?”

It was nice that the fundraiser was being held in a luxury hotel. They booked a suite for two nights, agreeing that they needed a little R&R. Now, all Laz wanted to do was carry her upstairs and make good use of their room.

“You, my love, are such a sweet talker, but we’re not going anywhere yet. Besides, Zen is going to be singing soon. I’ve missed enough over the last few months. I don’t want to miss her performance.”

Laz huffed out a mock irritated breath. “Fine. We can stay, but when we leave here, you’re all mine.”

“I’m all yours now and forever,” she whispered and cupped his cheek. Brushing her thumb gently over his light stubble, she flashed that grin again. “But when we get upstairs, I’ll let you do whatever you want to me.”

Laz lowered his head until his mouth covered hers. The kiss started out soft and sweet but quickly turned passionate. God, he loved this woman, and kissing her was definitely his favorite thing in the world to do.

“All right, you two, knock it off,” Dakota said from behind Laz and swatted his back. “Journey, we’re heading back to the buffet. Find us when you finish smooching with the one-armed man.”

Laz couldn’t help but laugh when he lifted his head. “You’re lucky you’re like a sister to me,” he said to Dakota as she walked away snickering.

“I’m going to go and get some more food. Do you want anything?” Journey asked.
