He didn’t speak for a moment, and before they reached the area where the silent auction was, he slowed.

“Listen. I’m only going to say….” Loud laughter drowned out whatever he was going to say. “Let’s go over there so I can at least hear myself.”

Journey followed him to a secluded hallway only a few steps away from the auction room. They moved to a quiet corner, and he stood in front of her, blocking the view of others.

“Okay, let me say this, and I’m only going to say it once.” His voice was low, and there was a bit of harshness in his tone. “You should’ve dropped the case.”

Journey leaned back and frowned. “What? Why would I do that? If your woman is doing what she’s being accused of doing, she deserves to spend time behind bars. Don’t let her good looks and sweet-talking blind you to the truth, Tony. She’s in serious trouble.”

Journey didn’t mean to come off so strong, but how dare he tell her that she should’ve dropped the case. He should know….

Her thoughts screeched to a halt. “What did you say to me?” she asked and glanced uneasily around, hoping someone would walk down that particular hallway. Or at least walk past it.

“You heard me,” Tony said, his low voice a near-snarl. “If you would’ve just dropped the case, none of this would be happening. You’ve ruined everything. It was bad enough that you dumped me and married someone else, but this….”

He balled his fist and gritted his teeth as if struggling to keep his composure.

“By working with Dennis Stratton, I finally would have had a chance to take my business to the next level. I needed that city contract we were collaborating on, but you just had to have him arrested.”

Journey’s mouth gaped. “Are you kidding me? The guy murdered his employee. What would you have me do? Let him walk around town as if he hadn’t done anything?”

“I needed that money! My employees were counting on me,” he said as if she hadn’t just spoken. His words held more anguish than anger. “And then I met the woman of my dreams, and you ruined that, too. She left me so that she could hide out God knows where!” he snapped, his face only inches from hers.

“Back up!” Journey snapped.

He didn’t move.

“I said back the hell off of me!” She pushed against his chest, surprised at how solid he was. He’d clearly been working out. When he still didn’t move, panic inched through her.

“You and I could’ve been so good together. Instead, you decided to marry that white guy when you told me you never wanted marriage. I guess I wasn’t the right color for you, huh.”

Anger surged to the surface, overriding her panic. “Be careful, Tony. You keep talking, and you’re going to say something you’ll regret.”

He chuckled. “I doubt that. What the hell do you think you can do to me?”

She opened her mouth to scream but gasped instead when she felt the gun in her side.

“Let’s move,” he said, grabbing her upper arm with his other hand.

“No!” Journey dug in her heels as best she could in her stilettos, but he was still able to drag her along.

She couldn’t go with him.

She couldn’t leave that area.

She had to do something, but with the barrel of a gun jammed into her ribs, she felt helpless.

“Tony, think about what you’re doing. Let go of me. You’re never going to get away with this.”

“Oh, you would be surprised at what I’ve gotten away with. Since you didn’t drop the case when you were warned, there’s only one other thing to do. Kill you.”
