There was no turning back now.

They arrived at their spot, and Harper leaned into him, staring at the crowd with awe written on her face. Okay, he could work with that. There was nothing weird about a woman smiling at the audience.

Donna and Damien announced Vance and Barbie, giving him a moment to take in the scene. The choir of about twenty or so women stood on a set of curved risers near the back of the stage. A shiny Steinway sat in the center of the space, with two trays of cookies on a table nearby. Their spot was on the far-left side of the stage. Vance and Barbie were situated across from them on the far right.

“We’re here to celebrate the first anniversary of the Singing Grannies Choral group,” Donna said, addressing the cameras. “It’s a pleasure to shine a light on those bringing joy to their city. These senior songbirds regularly serenade the residents at local nursing homes and share their love of music with the community. And while I’m told their founding member can’t be here. They wanted to dedicate this performance to her.”

“Let’s get this Bake or Bust started. The singing grannies will decide which celebrity team baked the tastiest confection,” Damien added.

The sparkly couple stood at the cookie table and invited the choir members to leave their perch and sample the baked goods. The ladies peered from tray to tray, some chuckling as they sampled the plain cookie penises. Others held up the masterfully decorated number one treats, oohing and aahing after each bite.

“Ladies, you’ve had a chance to sample the goods,” Donna drawled as the grannies returned to the risers.

The members nodded.

Donna tipped the red tray—Vance and Barbie’s tray—toward the audience.

“Raise your hand if your top choice was from this tray,” Damien called.

Landon braced himself. He knew what was coming.

A sea of hands went up.

“What about the blue tray?” Damien crooned.

One hand.

A little old lady in the front.

“I’m Granny B, and I like the shape of the cookies on the blue tray,” she blurted as the grannies giggled.

Well, they got one vote. At least it wasn’t a shutout.

Donna held up the red tray. “Vance and Barbie, you have won the firstCelebrity Bake or Bustchallenge. The singing grannies will now perform their rendition of Vance Vibe’s ‘Every Time You Break My Heart.’”

It was as if the walls were closing in on them.

No, not that song.

He turned to his wife and prepared for the worst.
