Holy crazy talk! She’d gone from anxious opera voice to barking a disturbed cheerleader chant.

“I was kidding about the lollipops,” Tanner replied, looking her over. “I saw the pictures online. You’re on the celebrity gossip sites. There’s speculation about you and Landon. Are you guys okay?” He glanced at the bobbing for bonbons surveillance picture. “Kinda looks like you’re not so good.”

Harper Barbara, act like a normal non-chocolate-obsessed person.

“Everything is fine. I’m fine. Totally and completely fine, fine, fine, fine.”

Tanner scratched his chin. “People who are fine usually don’t tell you they’re fine six times in three seconds.”

She grinned, praying there wasn’t any chocolate wedged between her teeth from her last bonbon binge. “I’m peachy keen. Does that one work for you?”

“It’s okay not to be okay,” Tanner answered.

Why was it so hard to get some bonbons in this place?

“You can drop the fortune cookie advice, Tanner. What I really need is for you to tell these nice people to sell me some bonbons,” she pressed, plowing ahead.

Tanner grimaced. “About that…” It appeared as if he was about to side with the clerks when the bakery telephone rang. He gestured for her to wait a minute and picked up the receiver. “Cupid Bakery, Baxter Park, it’s your dude, Tanner.”

She toyed with the tulle edge of her tutu and observed as his easy-going demeanor morphed into a befuddled expression. “Yeah, dude, she’s right here,” he answered, staring at her.

Who would call Cupid Bakery looking for her?

“Uh-huh,” the man uttered, then glanced around the shop. “It’s empty.” A pause. “Okay, gotcha.”

He hung up the phone.

And stood there.

And said nothing.

“Who was that? Was it the press?” she questioned.

She’d done a damned good job sneaking out the back this morning.

Had they tracked her down?

Tanner zoned out and stared out the shop’s front window.

She snapped her fingers. “Tanner, who was on the phone? Were they asking about me?”

Before the man could answer, the door to the bakery swung open, and a whoosh of air sent a chill through her body. She’d barely had a second to react before a stampede of footsteps echoed through the snug space.

“There she is. Get her!”
