“Watch your language, little miss.”

Only one person on the planet called her little miss, and that person wasn’t supposed to return from New Mexico for a week.

She jammed her left hand into the pocket of her jean shorts and glared at Mr. Sweet. “Did you tell on me about the bonbons?”

Babs leaned forward and looked out the window. “The bonbons are the least of your problems, missy. Get in.”

Schuman opened the door for her, and she climbed into the SUV next to her grandmother as Schuman got into the front seat.

The window closed, and the car continued down the street.

What was she supposed to say?

What did Babs know?

And why had she rolled up in a beefy black SUV with tinted windows like a mafia boss?

“Harper Barbara,” the woman said in heryou’ve got some explaining to do, young ladyvoice.

She plastered a grin on her lips. “Hey, Babs! You’re back a little early. How was New Mexico?”

“Enlightening, thanks to a visit I received a few days ago.”

“Enlightening, how?” she pressed, going for nonchalance, but her octave-jumping opera voice killed the easy-going vibe.

Her grandmother crossed her arms. “Why did you tell me you had the loan situation under control? I assumed you were negotiating a payment plan. You should have told me how serious it was.”

She gazed into her grandmother’s hazel eyes. There wasn’t much use in lying.

She leaned back into the plush leather seat. “I didn’t want you to worry. I wanted to take care of you like grandad would have.”

“Your grandfather might have been better with numbers, but he would have told me. We were a team.”

“I know. I’m sorry. But I was able to pay off the loan. I signed a contract with a record label, and they gave me a signing bonus.”

Babs nodded. “We’ll get to that, missy.”

“You know about the contract?”

“I do, and there’s another legal document I’ve recently learned about.”

“Another legal document?”

Babs narrowed her gaze. “A marriage license.”

Oh boy.

“Take your hand out of your pocket, Harper Barbara.”

She complied and allowed her grandmother to inspect the rings.

“I don’t even know where to start, Babs.”

“Let me help you, dear. You married your teenage pop crush, Landon Bartholomew Paige, in Las Vegas, Nevada, after being rejected by an internet pornography performer competition.”

Her jaw dropped. “Um…yeah, that’s technically correct, but I’m going to have to ask that you never utter the wordsinternet pornography performer competitionever again. And who have you been talking to?” She wracked her brain. She hadn’t connected with her friends since they’d kidnapped her. She’d been so wrapped up in her music that she’d shut out the world. Could Penny, Charlotte, and Libby have gone to see Babs? If anyone could track a person down, it was Penny’s tech nerd fiancé. But she had a feeling it wasn’t them.

“You’ve been busy, little miss. Not only did you become Landon’s wife, but you also became an aunt.”
