KINGSTON

Fuck me, Sunday was the most stunning creature I’d ever seen. She didn’t just take my breath away, she stopped my fucking heart. Everything in me begged to have her in my arms, against my chest, held tight and kept safe. Not just my wolf.

Me.

When had this shift happened? I’d been so determined to hold on to my hatred after her rejection, but somehow this woman had broken through the barrier I’d put up to protect myself. Instead of keeping her out, she’d managed to worm her way in deeper, proving I’d never be free of her or what she did to me.

Fuck.

“Well, you look... different,” Sunday said, a slight smile on her perfect crimson lips. But the light that had been in her eyes when Moira opened the door dimmed the moment Sunday saw me.

Even though she and Moira seemed amused, I could feel the shift in their moods. Like when you’re out for a walk and realize you just stepped in a pile of dog shit. AndIwas the proverbial shit in this equation.

It killed me to realize I was the one responsible for the change. Not that I could really blame either of them. I’d been a complete asshole. WhywouldSunday be happy to see me? I hadn’t given her a reason to want to be around me. I’d relied completely on my wolf’s connection to hers while Noah Blackthorne swooped in and charmed her literal pants off.

“You’re... fuck, Sunday, you’re so pretty.”

She sucked in a sharp gasp of surprise. “Why are you saying nice things to me?”

“Because a woman like you, looking like that, you deserve to hear the truth. And no matter how fucked things are between us, I’ve never lied to you. Not going to start now.”

Moira shoved past me, her tiny frame bumping into mine. “Don’t try to get cute, dog. You’ve been nothing but a dick to her, and she wouldn’t be going with you if she could help it. Remember that.”

I might be the one with the claws, but the witch’s words gutted me, flaying me open.

“True. And even though I probably don’t deserve it, I’m not going to waste an opportunity to set things right.”

Something flared in Sunday’s eyes as I spoke. Sure, I’d been responding to Moira, but my gaze never left my mate. That was for her benefit. A promise I wasn’t going to break.

She swallowed and adjusted her mask before cutting eye contact with me. “We should go.”

Moira sighed, her expression softening as she turned her attention back to her roommate. “Are you going to be okay? I need to swing by and pick up Emilia. I promised we’d walk in together, but if you need a referee, I can ask her to meet us there.”

I couldn’t wait for the little witch to get out of my fur.

“No, don’t do that,” Sunday said, her eyes narrowing slightly as she looked up at me. Though not with suspicion. “I think we’ll manage to play nice for at least that long.”

Oh, I’d play nice with her—and naughty if she’d let me. “I can behave. For now.”

Moira pressed her hand to her chest. “Mercy, miracles do exist.” Then she rolled her eyes and stepped right into my space, shoving one of her talon-like nails into my chest. “You fuck up tonight, dog, and I will rip your dick off and feed it to the fishes, you get me?”

The witch wasn’t fucking around. I had zero doubt she intended to do just that. I made no effort to hide my movements as I cupped a hand protectively over my junk. “No thanks. I like Jacob right where he is.”

Confusion flickered in the witch’s eyes. “You... named your dick after the werewolf in Twilight? I’ve heard of hero worship, but that seems like you went a little too far, buddy.”

I looked back at Sunday and the knowing flush blooming over her cheeks. “No. Sunday knows why.”

I couldn’t help myself. I winked.

Sunday’s lips were pressed into a tight line. Clearly she wasn’t going to share with the class.

“Jacob’s ladder,” I said, staring hard at Moira as she glanced down at my crotch. “I could have gone with Albert, but... Jake has a nice ring to it.”

Understanding dawned. “Oh. Ugh... I could’ve gone my entire life without ever knowing that. And Sunday, I think we need to have a chat about why exactlyyouknow. But on that note, I’m going to head off.” She pressed a chaste kiss to Sunday’s cheek. “See you guys there.”

“Alone at last,” I said as she disappeared down the corridor.
