Mom.

“I don’t believe you,” I whisper, even as tears prick in my eyes. “Nero would have told me. He never said…”

Chase laughs cruelly. “Yeah, I bet he didn’t. The guy’s cunt-struck, but this little nugget would have killed the mood, don’t you think?”

“No.” I shake my head again, searching desperately for an explanation that would make sense. “This was Roman,” I protest. “Not Nero. He couldn’t have known.”

“Who do you think ordered the hit?” Chase retorts, his gaze shifting to Nero, who’s making his way back towards us. “He wanted revenge on your family. He knew what he had to do—but he didn’t stop there.” Chas looks at me with triumph in his eyes as he drops the final bombshell. “He’s the one who said to make it hurt.”

My heart clenches, but Chase slips away before I can demand more information.

Nero rejoins me. “Ready to go?” he asks, smiling like nothing’s wrong.

And all I can do is nod, a smile frozen on my face as I follow him to the exit.

My husband.

The killer.
