“Nah, it’s just Mother Nature taking a quick shower so she’ll look her prettiest for us,” he said.“I was gonna catch a shower myself before we headed out.”
It took a moment for it to click.“Wait...are you just getting up, or just coming home?”
Micah grinned.“There was a wifi emergency in Lapis cabin, and it required my personal attention.”
“Stars, Micah.Do you have to fuck the guests?”
“When I show up at the cabin and she’s naked and carrying an unplugged router?Yeah, I do.”
“Don’t you get enough from Mona?”Though there was no one around to hear, I still lowered my voice.Mona and Micah had been casually involved for as long as I could remember.I didn’t think it was a good idea for him to be sleeping with the head of the council, but there was no telling Micah that.Though plenty of people had probably noticed Micah spending the night in Mona’s cabin once or twice a month, as far as I knew no one had told my mother.
“Mona is an old friend.Lisa from Lapis cabin is a new friend.And I can never have enough friends,” he said, pushing his wet hair off his forehead insouciantly.
“I should take you off the Help Desk roster.”
“Good luck with that.I’m the only person here who knows anything about computers.Besides, we here at Twisted Pines Lodge offer a full-service experience.”
I shook my head.Of course I wished Micah was more responsible.But with the way women threw themselves at him, he’d have to be a saint not to catch one or two.Speaking of which...“Movie night was fun.”
His grin somehow widened.“I’m so glad you joined us.This must mean that you no longer think that the outdoor theater is a ‘waste of money and man-power.’”
“Did I say that?”
“You did,” Micah said.The sky was lightening behind him, but the rain was still worryingly heavy.“I see you changed your mind once a certain doctor decided to attend.”
“I heard you asked her to help you pick the movie.”
“She has good taste.And I wanted to be welcoming to our guests.”
Jealousy clawed at me, vicious and deep.“Micah.If you touch her--”
His smile fell as he stepped back.“Is that what you think of me?”
“You literally just came from screwing some woman.”
“Yeah, some woman.Some rando I’ll never see again.There’s no way I would sleep with Edie, Jasper.I’m not so desperate for pussy that I have to score with your fated mate.”
“You’re spending a lot of time with her.”
“Yeah, because I like her, and she’s going to be my damned sister.Ifyou get your shit together and you don’t drive her away.”
“What are you talking about?I’m not driving her away.I’m the one who convinced her to stay.”
He snorted.“You know, I was pissed off that you thought I’d sleep with Edie.But now I see the problem.You are an idiot.”
I threw up my hands and walked into the house.“I’m making fucking coffee,” I said, stomping into the kitchen.
Micah came in a couple of steps but didn’t venture past the tiled entryway so he wouldn’t drip on the carpet.“You’ve been avoiding her for days.She thinks you’re not interested in her.”
“I’ve been giving her space!That’s what she wanted!”Why did coffee take so damned long?Because I was already waiting, I popped a couple of bagels into the toaster.
“Well, you’re about to spend two days with her in the backcountry, so I think space is out the window.”
“What?No.She’s not coming with us.She’s got to stay here and take care of Mom.”
“Well, we promise our guests that a medical professional will come along on these backcountry trips, right?Normally it’s Dr.Barnes, but since we’ve got two doctors now he suggested she should go.”
“Oh.”I had completely forgotten about having a doctor come along.The worst injury we’ve ever had in the backcountry was a sprained ankle, and we were all First Aid certified, but it make the guests feel more comfortable knowing that there was someone available if something major happened.
