Dominic growled, spinning away to pace.“You think you can stop me, boy?”

I blanched at the thought of taking him on.Though he’d always been gentle and kind to me, stories had followed him up from Arcadia.Right now, I believe they were true.“Micah.He knows Mona.They’re…friends.”

“Friends?”Edie asked.

“Naked friends,” I clarified quietly, avoiding my mother’s eye.

Of course, she heard me and puffed up with rage.“Are you saying that my son has been consorting with the woman who poisoned me?”

“Ah…” I looked to Edie for help. Her eyes looked as wide as mine felt.“We shouldn’t waste time talking about that now.I’m calling Micah,” I said, pulling my phone from my pocket.

“While you do that, I’m going to take your mother to the clinic. She wouldn’t go until she knew that someone was going after Mona,” Edie said.

I held up my hand as Micah answered.“What’s up Jas?”

“Mona’s been poisoning Mom.We’re going out to confront her.Do you want to come with?”

“Mona?Mom?”

“Mom knows about you and Mona.I told her.”As Micah cursed, I continued.“You know her better than we do.Do you want to come?”

“Yes,” he said.“I’m not far from clan land.I’ll wait for you on the road.”

“See you soon,” I said, clicking off. Then, to Dominic: “Let’s go.”

“Wait.I need your help getting Melinda to the car,” Edie said quickly.“She refuses to use a wheelchair and--”

Dominic, whose pacing seemed to have wound him tighter and tighter, stalked over to couch. He swept Mom up in his arms and, with fire in his eyes, marched to the door.

We picked Micah up a few minutes later and the three of us crammed into the front seat of Dominic’s truck. It took less than sixty seconds for Micah to crack.“You told Mom about me and Mona?”

“I figured you might care enough about her to see what she’s really up to,” I said.“Plus, I need your expertise.Would you be able to identify Hen’s Teeth seeds? We found them in Mom’s tea.”

“Yeah, probably.”He pulled out his phone and started to search.“It doesn’t make sense.Mona wouldn’t do this.”

“Are you thinking with your dick?”Dominic said.Micah flinched, whipped by Dom’s voice.“She wants to be Alpha.”

“That’s just it, she doesn’t.She’s said it a million times.”

“A million times?”Dominic asked with venom.

Micah blushed.“We’ve known each other a long time. We’ve been friends since…” He screwed his mouth shut.It was strange to see his sunny face so stormy.“We have an understanding.Or I thought we did.”

No one said anything the rest of the ride.

Mona’s house was on the outskirts of the clan village, backed into the forest. She’d built a wall for privacy and planted a thick garden. It looked like a witch’s cottage tucked into the trees “Let me do the talking,” I said.“We need proof. We need answers.”

Dominic growled low in this throat.Micah and I glanced at each other as the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.

“I know your Beta bond with my mother requires you to defend her against attackers. But my mother is a different kind of Alpha,” I reminded Dominic.Edie had asked me to be reasonable, and I would try, for her.“She believes the Alpha is a servant of the clan, not the other way around. If Mona is responsible for this, we need to bring it to the rest of the council.I know she’s angry, but when she calms down she’ll feel differently. We need to play this right, Dom.We need to bring it to the council.”

Dominic’s expression got even darker, but he nodded sharply. Then he swung down from the truck and plowed through Mona’s gate so fast that Micah and I scrambled to keep up.

We found her in her workshop. It was a small space, crowded with drying herbs hanging from the ceiling and narrow drawers covered with curling, overlapping labels. As we approached, Mona shook her hips and shoulders and sang a bit of a song.

“She’s got her headphones on,” Micah said, then knocked at the outside of the shed.Mona jumped, then smiled when she saw him.Her expression hardened when she saw me and Dominic behind him.She touched a button on her headphones and pulled them out of her ears.“Hey Mico. What’s happening?”

Micah cringed a little at the nickname.“We need to talk to you, Mona.”
