Once I knew, there would be no going back.
I jerked to my feet.“I should be going.”
Confusion and disappointment filled those big, beautiful eyes before she shuttered her emotions away.She stood up as well.“Thank you for your help this afternoon.”
I nodded, guilt mixing with desire in my stomach.I was not a reckless person, I reminded myself.I had responsibilities, commitments.I didn’t give in to temptation in other aspects of my life, and I wouldn’t do it now.
Any sort of relationship would be a distraction, and I didn’t need that right now.If the singing of my heartstone was any measure, a relationship with Edie would be a disaster.
“Maybe you should stay in a hotel tonight.”
“Maybe you’re right,” she said, looking back through the open doorway.It somehow looked like an even bigger mess than before.“I really didn’t think this trip through.I’m not thinking clearly.”
“It’ll get easier soon.”
“Do you think?”
“Not really,” I said.“But you’ll get more used to it.”
She nodded.“Like I said.It’s been a weird day.”
I got the impression she was apologizing for nearly kissing me.It made me want to snap her into my arms and show her exactly how much I wanted her.Everything in me screamed to touch her, but I held myself back.“Take care of yourself,” I managed, then started down the steps.
“Jasper?”
I turned, ready to run back up to her.“The pizza,” she said, handing me the box.As I took it from her, our fingers brushed.
The heat from my heartstone burst, sending molten lava through my veins.My mouth went dry, my vision wavered.I saw Edie’s pupils dilate as she took a shuddering breath.She experimentally moved her finger against mine, and I felt the stroke over my entire body.
I yanked the box away before the sensation could convince me to do something monumentally stupid.I could still pull back from this.We’d touched, that was all.Surely that couldn’t be enough to create the bond of a fated mate.
“Take care of yourself,” I managed, then practically ran down the steps.
