Milesaway,anotherfirecrackled.Another man paced with his phone to his hear.With a disgusted sound, he hung up.“Barnes isn’t answering.”
“I knew we couldn’t trust him,” said the figure sitting nearest the fire.She was tapping her fingers against the arm of her chair, the cracked black stone in her ring reflecting the light of the flames.“He’s as brilliant as his grandfather, but he’s unstable.”
“What if he’s dead?”
“We got what we needed out of him,” the woman said.“We just have to find another doctor to continue his work.”
“There is no other doctor, mother,” the man said, jiggling his watch nervously.
“Ask Theo.I’m sure he knows someone who is both brilliant and greedy.”
The man huffed, then sat across from her.The young woman who sat on the floor between the chairs slid over to make room for him.“We’ve lost our insider in Twisted Pines.”
“We’ve lost one of our insiders,” the older woman said.“But not all of them.Let’s not be hasty, Leopold.Alexis, are you paying attention?”
The young woman nodded, moving carefully so as not to disturb the plastic tube in her arm.Her blood was slowly filling a bag, and she knew from experience that it would make a mess if she moved too quickly.It would also be painful, but her grandmother would be much more upset about the mess in her formal parlor.
“I’m about to give you a useful lesson.The most valuable resource in the world isn’t oil, or gold, or property.It’s not even you, my girl,” she said, and Alexis bowed her head.“It’s information.With the right information, the rest of the world comes to you.”
“Yes ma’am,” Alexis said.
“There’s more than one way to take down Melinda Moreau.”Her wizened fingers gripped the arm of the couch hard.“We’ve only just started to execute our plan.”
She rose, her old bones creaking no matter how many treatments she had.She stared down at her son and granddaughter as the flickering flames threw funhouse shadows over her wrinkled face.“I will take back Twisted Pines,” Victoria said.“I will be Alpha again.”
