CHAPTERFOURTEEN

TANNER

Istand in the middle of the bar, looking around as Wesley slips into a room off to the side. I watch as a bunch of other men follow behind him. There is a guy around my age behind the bar who doesn’t go inside, and a couple of women walking around.

Then I see her.

The naked woman from earlier—Brianne.

Thankfully, she’s dressed now.

“Tanner, is it?” she asks on a sneer.

I sink my teeth into the skin on the inside of my cheek as I watch her. She doesn’t say anything else, but I have a feeling that she has plenty to say to me, judging by the way she’s watching me. Instead of responding to her, I take a single step backward, dip my head and turn around to head to a table that I noticed far away in the corner of the room.

“Run, bitch,” she calls out as she cackles. It’s not a laugh at all, it’s a damn cackle.

Pinching my eyes closed, I sink down in the chair and cover my face with my hands. I try to calm myself. Breathing in and out slowly, evenly, because right now I want to run and cry. I don’t do conflict.

I never have.

Not even with Brent, as much as I try to stand up to him. He demands I do things, and I end up doing them the way he wants them.

I mean, I think the conflict today with Wesley lasted a whole five minutes. I’m just not a fighter like that. If it’s something that I don’t agree with, I won’t say anything and then just do what I want anyway. It’s not the best trait in the world, but it’s who I am.

Taking my phone out of my pocket, I decide to text Jenna to try and occupy my time and keep my mind busy elsewhere. Because if I don’t, I’m going to look up and see the woman with her gaze directed on me, attempting to bore holes into my body with her gaze. Or maybe trying to kill me with an evil look. Either way, I have no desire to have any part of Brianne.

Is Brent pissed?!?!

JENNA: Where the hell are you? He’s about to go out of his damn mind!!!!!

You wouldn’t even guess.

JENNA: Oh my GOD!!! You told him?

I’m here with him. We’re going to bring Brent’s car back soon.

JENNA: He is going to be so PISSED OFF.

I know.

I don’t respond with anything else, and I stare at my phone, waiting for the three little dots to appear, hoping that she will type something else back. I don’t know what to do. Brent is going to lose his mind.

I should have just told Brent that I was pregnant and that I didn’t know who the father was. That I was going to raise it on my own and be single until I die. That’s what I should have done, because this is going to be so much damn drama, I don’t think that I can emotionally handle it and I know that Jenna will be there for me, but I do not want to put her in the middle.

“Here’s some water,” a deep voice murmurs as he plunks a glass down on the table in front of me.

Lifting my head, I look up into the eyes of a man that I’ve known since high school. He was a couple years older than me, but I remember we had algebra together.

“Byron?” I breathe.

He gives me a smile. “What’re you doin’ here, Tanner?” he asks as he reaches for the chair across from me. I watch as he tugs it out, then sinks down and places his forearms on the edge.

“You wouldn’t believe me if I told you,” I say with a smile.

“Try me,” he offers, lifting a brow.

“Why don’t you tell me? I haven’t seen you since you graduated. Enlighten me on all that is Byron.”
