CHAPTERTHIRTY-ONE

TANNER

Wesley stands at my side, his arm slung across my shoulders while I tip my head back and look up into Brent’s eyes. He doesn’t try to hide the disappointment. He clearly does not think that I’ve made the right life choices, and honestly, I’m wondering about that myself.

“You didn’t quit school?” he asks.

Frowning, I shake my head twice, then focus on him again. “I was kidnapped while trying to go to class. I won’t quit.”

It’s his turn to frown, but I don’t understand it. I didn’t quit school. I’m going to finish the classes because I am determined to have a career where I can support myself and my baby if the need ever arises.

“But you hate it. Figured you would quit immediately.”

“And you know I hate it, but you forced it on me anyway.”

He snorts, lifting his hand and running his fingers through his hair. “It’s only been a couple of weeks, of course you hate it, it’s not anything you ever wanted to do.”

“But?”

“But you know that it’s a better choice than what you were wasting your time doing.”

I want to tell him no. I want to tell him to fuck off, but I don’t do either. Instead, I nod my head once, my gaze never leaving his. “I’m going to regret admitting that you were right, and I can’t admit it yet, because I’m not working yet, so you’ll have to ask again at a later date.”

Brent lets out a low chuckle.

“You done attempting to make Tanner feel like shit? I’d like to have Tiny take a look at her,” Wesley announces.

I’d almost forgotten that he was standing next to me. Brent clears his throat and dips his chin slightly, his eyes searching mine.

“You good, Tanner?” he asks.

“I’m good.”

He clears his throat, taking a step backward, his gaze shifting from mine to Wesley before he speaks.

“I’ll give you guys a couple hours to get out of here. After that, you’re on your own,” he announces, then turns toward the direction of his car.

Without another word, I watch him walk toward his detective’s car, open the door, and sink down into the driver’s seat. He starts the engine, then drives away, as if he was never here.

Prez makes his way up to us. He jerks his chin in Wesley’s direction before he leans forward slightly and Wesley asks him a question, his voice barely above a whisper.

“What happens now?” he asks.

“With?” Prez asks from behind us.

I turn my head, watching one of the men drag Brianne behind him. She’s stumbling and she looks pretty crappy, but I don’t call out to her or ask her if she’s okay. She is a disgusting human and even though I couldn’t sit back and do nothing while that man was trying to kill her, that doesn’t mean that I ever want to see her ass again.

“Brianne?” Wesley asks.

Prez looks behind him, watching as one of the men drags her over to a van. My brother is gone, thankfully, but not for long. He’s made it very clear that he’ll send someone to ensure that we’re gone soon. Although, I have a feeling it will be sooner rather than later so I’m kind of in a hurry to leave.

“Already called Tiny. We should know if she’s knocked up or not by the time we eat dinner.”

“If she is?” I chance asking.

Neither of the men says anything, but Prez also doesn’t hang around to find out anything. He takes a few steps backward before he turns his back to me and walks away. Shifting my attention over to Wesley, I tip my head back and look up into his eyes.

“What happens if she is?” I ask.
