“What does that mean?”

“It means you’re mine. Whenever, however, wherever.”

I swallow down the hard lump in my throat. No man has ever spoken to me in such a manner and I’m not sure how to react or respond. “Can I be honest?”

“Always.”

“Saying things like that scares me.”

His hands drop and he steps away. “I’m so sorry. That’s not my intention.”

“You misunderstood what I meant,” I say, hoping I can find a way to explain. “Where I’m from, men don’t talk to women like that. My father never whispered sweet nothings in my mama’s ear and I’m pretty sure my brother doesn’t have a romantic bone in his body. He does what’s expected of him, when it’s expected of him, including marrying the perfect Southern belle. When you say I’m yours, it scares me because I want it to be true. The excitement inside me is unfamiliar, and there’s a lot I have to learn.”

A slow smile spreads across his face as he steps forward, dips his head, and brushes a kiss full of wanton promise against my lips. “I’m going to enjoy being your teacher.”
