“It’s a possibility.” I’m fearful now that he won’t be happy if the tests confirm there’s a bun in my oven. Will I be happy? There’s only one way to find out. I grab the box from him and hurry into the bathroom, shutting the door behind me. I quickly scan the directions, which tell me to pee on the sticks the first thing in the morning, but I’ve waited long enough.

After I’ve finished, I place the test on the counter and open the door. “It’ll take a few minutes,” I tell him as I step into the bedroom.

He looks worried sitting on the edge of the bed, his arms crossed over his chest. “I don’t know whether I should kiss you or spank you.”

“Spank me? What did I do?”

“You should have called to let me know you were coming home.”

“You’re right, but you know me. Stubborn as a mule.”

He pushes to his feet and shuffles over to me, wrapping his arms around me. “I missed you so fucking much,” he murmurs before lowering his head to kiss me. It’s hard and hungry, reclaiming me as his with a searing brand. “I swear to God, Hadley, if you’re pregnant, you’re never leaving my bed again.”

“How are you going to make that happen?”

“By marrying you.” He sticks a hand deep into his pocket and pulls out a ring box. “Baby or no baby, will you marry me, Hadley?”

Every girl inevitably dreams about how and when the man of her dreams will propose to her. I never pictured it happening in my bedroom while waiting for a pregnancy test, but it’s still perfect because I’m crazy about Theo. He’s the one for me.

“Yes,” I manage to say through streams of tears. “Of course, I’ll marry you.”

The timer I set dings, signaling it’s time to check the test. We both forget about the proposal and the ring as we rush toward the bathroom together.

“I can’t look,” I tell him. “You do it.”

He takes hold of my hand, lifting it to press against his chest. His touch is firm and steady as he reaches out to grab the test from the counter. “Before I look, tell me what you want it to say.”

“I don’t know what I want it to say,” I confess. “Does it matter? Even if I’m not pregnant, I’m not going anywhere. We have a lifetime to keep trying.”

His smile is wicked. “Yes, we do.” He glances at the test, sets it back down on the counter, and kisses me.

“What does it say? Tell me!”

He kisses me again and again and again, thwarting every attempt to find out the results until he’s left me breathless.

“Are you ready Hadley? Ready for me to tell you what it said?”

I shake my head. “Yes,” I whisper.

He places a finger under my chin, tilting my head up until our gazes me. “You changed my life, baby. You were the salvation I needed, and I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

“That’s good because you’re changing my life again. You’re pregnant.”
