“I thought you said those were just stories locals like to tell to make themselves feel special?”

Davis takes another drink of his water, tugging his hat lower over his eyes. “There is magic here. We don’t know where it comes from.” He shrugs. “Anthony is one of those that believes it to be true. Years ago, he pulled many of our parents together in an attempt to form an Axis.”

An Axis? I’ve heard that term mentioned before but can’t remember exactly where. “What’s an Axis?”

“Anthony claimed that by bringing together those who possessed magical powers, they could symbolize the four courts of Fairy. Their combined power would form the Axis. Sort of like a coven I suppose.”

“What was the point of the Axis?”

Davis shakes his head, his eyes dark. “I don’t know. All I know is that it changed some members of the group. Permanently.”

My eyes drift to the scar just beneath his jaw, and I infer a lot from what he’s not saying. His dad. “Who was in the Axis?”

“Besides Anthony, it was my dad, Archer’s parents, Rhys and Lena’s dad, Ruby’s mom, Ezra’s dad, and your mom.”

My heart skips a beat. That’s basically everyone I’ve met since I moved to the island. There’s been a weird connection I’ve felt with all of them since I got here. But why? Just because our parents were in some weird cult together? Why didn’t my mom ever mention any of this? My thoughts drift to her last letter and all the things left unsaid. I’ve read it a thousand times, but maybe I need to read it again from a different perspective.

“What happened to them?” I murmur.

“They changed. It was different for each of them.” Davis growls as he rises, crossing the deck to stand over me. I tip my head up, shielding my eyes from the bright sun overhead. “Whatever Anthony’s goal was, it never came together, but I think he might see you as his next mark.”

“Why would he be targeting me?”

“When Anthony came to town, he already knew who he was looking for. He sought out your mom, got in her good graces. Befriended the rest of them and worked his way into their circle until he became part of their group.”

“How do you know?” I ask, dread sinking like a weighted ball in my stomach. The water I just chugged sloshes around in my belly.

“From my mom. He’s not a good person, Miri. You should stay away from him.”

“Well, I was hoping not to make an enemy the first week in town, but I suppose I can dodge his calls and not show up for dinner. And I’m not really sure what to do about the whole holding my business hostage thing.”

Davis sighs and cringes. “He will keep coming after you. I’d rather you just get this out of the way. You should bring someone with you.”

I notice he’s not offering. I suck in my cheeks. Is this attraction really all one-sided?

I hum, “I guess I can ask Archer. He seems fun.”

Davis growls low in his throat, sending shivers cascading over my sweat soaked skin. I’m quickly getting chilled now that I’ve stopped moving, but that’s not what has my skin tingling.

“Like fucking hell you will. I’ll come with you. Make sure he doesn’t do any shady ass shit while you’re at his house.”

Shock at his offer has me raising my brows even as my mouth turns down in a disgusted frown. “You think he’s going to put the moves on me?”

He holds out his hand, hoisting me up when I slap mine in his.

“Shit. Well, now I do.” Davis stares at me with horror on his face as soon as the words are out of his mouth.
