How the hell is she here now, if that’s the case? If the veil came down, then why didn’t Anthony hop on through to the other side? He’d have no need for us to form an Axis. The magical group of bonded pairs that apparently will have enough magic to pull down the veil between this world and Fairy.

I drag my hand over my face, hissing at my bruised knuckles. Archer’s head is hard as a fucking rock.

“I need to get Lena out of here.” Archer’s mouth turns down as my sister slumps into his side. She can barely stand up. I shoot a dirty look at Miri. It was her potion that put Lena in this state. Davis steps into my line of sight, his own eyes narrowing.

“Take that pissy look and shove it up your ass. Get out of here before we all end up beating the shit out of each other.”

“Well, fuck. This has been a fun night.” Ezra might be the only sane one at the moment and that’s not normal. “Archer, take Lena and get her something to eat and drink. Davis, you and Miri head home. Ruby, I’ll take you and… our new friend back to my place.”

“No.” Ruby and I both say at the same time.

Ruby turns and glares at me before looking at the woman who hasn’t moved any closer to us. I don’t blame her. We’re a fucking mess.

“We can go back to my place,” Ruby says with a nod, as though that settles things.

Ezra snatches a look at the woman. His hands land on Ruby’s shoulders and he turns her to face him. “We have no idea who she is. She says she’s from Fairy. What if she’s Fae? Do you really want her in your house?”

Ruby closes her eyes, taking a deep breath and exhaling before she speaks. “Fine. You can come with, but I need to know who the hell she is.”

“I’m coming too.” I don’t want to examine why I feel so strongly about going with them.

I should go with Lena and make sure she’s okay. As much as I don’t want to give Archer any credit right now, I know he’ll take good care of her. The shithead.

“Whatever,” Ruby sighs at me and then turns back to the woman.

“Will you come back to my place with us? I have cookies and Netflix.”

“Jesus, Cube, are you trying to kidnap her?” Ezra has his hand on the back of Ruby’s neck, and I can’t believe she hasn’t told him to fuck off yet. I guess tonight’s been unsettling for all of us.

“Dicks in one ATV, lady gardens in another.” Ruby calls out as if everything has been decided and I roll my eyes. She’s obviously fine. Ezra drops his hand and takes a step away from her.

“Lady garden? Really?” Ezra asks, and I can’t help but laugh at the disgusted look on his face.

The three of us turn toward Ruby’s lookalike. She’s still staring at us as though she doesn’t know what to make of us. Join the club. I slowly make my way closer to her, as if I’m approaching a skittish animal. She just watches me with those wide, observant eyes.

“I’m Rhys. That’s Ruby and Ezra.” I point out the other two, realizing she might want to know who the hell we are. Her eyes flash to Ruby for a second before snapping back to mine. She licks her lips, and now that I’m close, she looks cold.

“I’m Zara.”

“Zara. Nice to meet you. Are you okay riding back into town with Ruby? We can go to her place. Get something to eat and talk.” I feel like I’m pretending to be a nice guy. I don’t know why it feels like I’m putting on a front, because I am a nice guy. Besides punching my best friend when he’s sleeping with my sister. I just don’t want to scare her.

Her eyes drift over the three of us before she nods. “Okay.”

We walk back to where Ruby and Ezra are waiting next to the ATVs. Zara hesitates when I break off to get in my vehicle and something warm and bright bursts in my chest.

“We’ll be right behind you.” I tip my head, indicating she should go with Ruby. Zara nods and then gets in without another word.
