“Up here,” Ezra calls back, and the dual sounds of feet jogging up the steps reaches me.

“Let’s go sit down.” Rhys leads me over to the couch, sitting in the corner before tugging me down next to him.

Davis and Miri hurry inside a few seconds later. Davis is covered in dust and his shirt is soaked and sticking to him like a second skin.

“What’s going on? Ruby said it was an emergency.”

“Ruby,” I scold her but she shakes her head at me, trying to run a hand through her crazy hair but it’s too tangled. She makes an unhappy sound and drops her hand.

“This totally constitutes an emergency.”

“I agree with Ruby. For once,” Rhys says next to me.

“Finally, someone is starting to see how reasonable I am.”

“Urgent maybe, but not life and death,” I say, cocking my head as Ruby and I stare at each other.

“It could have been.” She throws up her hands. I agree with her, but I don’t say that out loud.

“For fuck’s sake, what the hell happened?” Davis growls, and Ruby and I shut our mouths. Well, I do. Ruby gives Miri and Davis a rundown of what we just shared with everyone else.

“By the way, were you swimming in a pool of sweat and then rolled around in plaster?” Ruby finishes up with a jibe at Davis. I don’t think she can help herself.

“I was doing demo on one of our new buildings.” Davis says with a huff, lifting the bottom of his shirt to wipe off his face and flashing a stomach that is rippled with muscles. Rhys throws his hand over my eyes, and I chuckle quietly, turning toward him.

Davis might be stacked with muscle, but come on, all of these guys are. It’s absurd how attractive they all are. Still, there’s something about Rhys’s dark messy hair, his depthless blue eyes, and the way he looks at me—no, the way he makes me feel—that’s incomparable. Nothing will ever top that feeling.

Miri is standing beside Davis, her arms crossed over her chest, her jaw grinding. “We need to figure out how to get Anthony removed from our bond.”
