“Normal! Ha. Why would we ever want to be normal. That sounds boring.” Ruby chuckles like one of the villains in all the movies she’s been making me watch, as she hooks the lime dress back on the rack. I guess that wasn't the winner then.

Miri smacks a hand over her face. “Ruby, seriously. Don’t say shit like that. Now you’re going to fall into a pothole and break a leg. Or one of us will morph into a chipmunk or something.”

“I don’t believe in bullshit like that.” Ruby waves her off and Lena shakes her head in disbelief.

“Things like what? Veils that open to another realm. Fated partners you bond with in order to form a magical coven. Fae bad guys who want to use us as their human puppets?”

Ruby ignores Lena, and we follow her out of the store.

“I swear that woman just likes to tempt fate,” Miri murmurs under her breath. I can’t help but think it’s the opposite. She’s trying to figure out if her actions mean anything. Or if she’s a victim of fate and her decisions won’t make a bit of difference.

We spend the rest of the afternoon roaming around downtown and enjoying people watching. The tourists have officially overtaken Wild Haven, and it’s an eclectic crowd. It’s such a simple thing, walking down the street and choosing when to stop, what stores to visit, when I’m hungry and want to eat. But these are all things I never had control over before. It’s a luxury that should be afforded to everyone, but isn’t. I don’t begrudge the people around me laughing and living in blissful ignorance, but I will never take this freedom for granted.
