KACI

“It’s time Grace.” I spoke into the phone.

“What do you mean?” She questioned.

“It’s been a year.” I toyed with the strings on my comforter. “It’s time to go home.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah.” Was I? “I think so.” My voice betrayed me.

“Okay. I’ll come out and help you pack.”

“Thanks.” My thumb hovered over the end button before pressing it.

Taking a deep breath, I cried. Fat ugly tears rolled down my face.

I cried for the life I could have had.

I cried for the pain I suffered.

I cried for Luke.

Tears racked my body. I held onto the only thing that had gotten me through this year. That damn Glenwood Tigers sweatshirt with #37 on the back. Seeing it always brought up the old memories. But that’s all they were, memories. I couldn’t go back and rewrite the past. I couldn’t change what happened. My heart broke for that girl. Because that wasn’t me. Not anymore. Not since that day.

Once the tears subdued I picked up the phone.

“Hey sweetie. Your dad and I were just talking about you! Tony! Tony, Kaci’s on the phone.” I couldn’t help but laugh. “Hi mom.”

“Sweetheart what’s wrong? Is it Luke?”

“Yeah.” I managed a whisper.

“Honey come home. We miss you.” My dad talked into the phone.

“Well, that’s kinda why I called.” Swallowing over the lump in my throat I willed myself to continue. “I want to move back home.”

“Oh Kaci that’s wonderful! We left your room just as it was baby.”

“Thanks mom but, can you look around see if anything’s for sell?”

My dad got back on the line. “You want to buy a house?”

“Well… yeah. I’ve been saving up for a long time and yeah.” I wanted him to know I wasn’t going anywhere.

“You know I heard Fran saying that Oscar was thinking about selling his granddads house.”

“Oscar Carlson?” Dad questioned mom.

“Yes.” She hushed my dad. “Now I know that’s probably not something you want but I can call her and see about it. Probably get a good deal and we can help you fix it up.”

My heart raced at the thought of moving into that house. They didn’t know the stories that house could tell. Would it be too much too soon to move into that house?

I spoke before my mind could even register what that would mean. “Yes! Please call her.”

“Okay I will first thing in the morning. Goodnight sweetie.”

“Goodnight!” My dad chimed in.
