Seven Years Ago

“Let’s go Tigers!” Clapping in-between chants, we kept cheering through the timeout. “Let’s go Tigers!”

We were down by one touchdown at the start of the Second Quarter. We had home field advantage at the semi-finals. This game would determine if we would go to state this year. There was defiantly size on our team but not compared to the boys we were playing.

In purple the Mustangs defensive line was double the size of our offensive line. Drew could hardly hit any of the slants. Hell he could hardly see over their line. Drake was getting his ass handed to him trying to block for Nick and Luke. The boys were in for a fight. I knew how bad they wanted it and how bad my dad wanted it. They wouldn’t go down easy.

They rushed onto the field getting down in position. I could hear Drew calling the play. Unfortunately, I knew most of the plays by heart. Dad insisted to keep me in the loop or help him run new plays at home in the back yard.

Drew pulled back ball in hand, faked a pitch to Nick, with all eyes on Nick, Drew had time to push left. The ball soared down field to Luke. Jumping in the air Luke came down sprinting with the ball tucked in his arm. Drake was right beside him shoving guys to the side as they came for Luke. A Mustang leaped and caught Luke by the back of his shoulder pads pulling him down.

A yellow flag flew up in the air as the refs blew their whistles. “Horse collar, defense. 15-yard penalty and automatic first down.”

After no gain on the play dad called a time-out.

Jumping up and down we started cheering. “Tiger!”

The crowd joined in chanting back to us. “Power!”

“Tiger!”

“Power!”

Shaking my pom-poms together I turned back to the field. The boys were on the sidelines still. “Let’s go Luke!” I watched his head tip up as I yelled his name.

They ran onto the field lining up on the 20-yard-line. There was three minutes left in the half. Drew pitched to Drake who barreled through the line coming up a yard short of the first down.

“Gain of nine yards on the play by senior Drake Jones #70. Third and one.” The announcers voice came through the speakers.

The crowd cheered. The girls always wanted to do cheers at times like this. Vital times in the game. Jenn started calling out for us to cheer, ‘Up, Up’.

“No we need to wait!” I yelled to the girls.

I heard the snap. Drew dropped back pitching to Nick. Nick ran behind him pitching to Luke.

“It’s a reverse!” The announcer shouted over the speakers.

Luke pumped down the field jumping over a defender Drake had knocked down. Right as a Mustang leaped getting ahold of his legs, Luke stuck the ball out as he landed hitting the pylon.

“Touchdown Tigers!”

“Okay now we cheer!” I motioned to the girls.

We all turned around chanting to the crowd. “Up, up on your feet. Glenwood Tigers can’t be beat! Up, up on your feet. Glenwood Tigers can’t be beat!”

Jenn pushed her way to my side of the cheer line. Once we were done chanting I went to reach in my bag when her hand latched onto my arm pulling me back.

“What?”

“I’m the cheer captain I call the cheers not you!”

Here we go.“If you’re going to call the cheers you need to know the time. And when were that close to the goal with one yard to a first down is not the time. Not to mention the fact that we were losing. You don’t cheer we can’t be beat at that time Jenn.” She was so stupid.

“Just let the cheer captain call the cheers.” She gave me a once over, her eyes landing on the button pinned to my skirt. “And how many times do I have you tell you, you can’t wear that button it’s not uniform.”

“Are you mad you don’t have a players button to wear? You don’t seem to bother Elie, or Gracey, or SJ.” Rolling my eyes, I reached in my bag for some money before walking away. “If you’ll excuse me cheer captain I will be going to the bathroom and getting some popcorn.”
