KACI

Tears streamed down my face at Luke’s words. He did love me. He would go through sickness and health with me. I still wish he would have been there for me. Maybe somehow, in the grand scheme of things, it was supposed to turn out this way. We were supposed to be separated by the accident.

Luke was the strongest person I knew so the fact that he said he wasn’t strong enough to put me back together meant something. It meant a lot to me. He admitted weakness and vulnerability. I knew he was scared when everything happened but hell, you think I wasn’t?

“I thought you were going to die.” Luke’s voice was a mere whisper. “There was so much blood from your head. And you couldn’t move. I thought I was going to lose you.”

He pulled me tighter into his arms and smoothed a hand down my hair. Resting my head on his shoulder I held onto him. I never wanted to be without him again. Being this close to him again, feeling this much love again, it would destroy me.

I hadn’t been back in his room since the night at the bar when we aired our dirty laundry. His scent engulfed me. I looked around at our discarded clothes scattering the room. Other than that it was mostly tidy. Just as I remembered it.

When he graduated Luke had just moved in to this house. I helped him fix it up so it didn’t smell like moth balls anymore or look like a crack head lived in it. He had always been a clean person, one that didn’t need much to get by. After we got engaged he wanted me to move in right away but with my feelings of unease I told him it was best to wait until after the wedding. Still, I had a dresser with clothes in it and decorated the bedroom for two, not a single bachelor.

“What are you thinking about babe?” Luke’s voice cut through my thoughts.

“Just admiring the fact that your room looks just the same as after you moved in.” I turned my body so I was straddling him.

“Why wouldn’t it?”

“I don’t know. I mean you still have pictures of us in here.” How did you bring girls home with my face by your bed? I didn’t want to ask the question I didn’t want the answer to.

His lips brushed mine. “It’s our room baby. I wanted it to stay that way.”

Tears brimmed my eyes. I tried to blink them away but it just made them fall harder. “God I’ve missed you.”

“You have no idea.”

Luke ran his lips across mine before peppering them down my neck. I could feel him growing against me. This time there was no rush. No frenzied kisses. This time he worshiped me. He loved me slow and soft. His eye’s never left mine as he pushed into my wetness.

My hands explored his body all over again. This, this wasn’t like all the other times since I had been back. This was more. This was us showing each other how much we loved the other person. That we weren’t going anywhere. Nothing could separate us this time. It was just us.

“I love you so much Kaci.” Luke breathed.

“I love you Luke.”

Rolling over I was met with Luke’s bare back. A sight I had missed. We hadn’t left his house since getting home Friday after the carnival. Looking at the clock it was early Sunday morning. I tiptoed out of bed and headed to the kitchen.

I mixed the waffle batter while the bacon sizzled on the stove top. Music streamed out of my phone through the kitchen. I was moving my hips to the rhythm when his sleep laced voice sounded.

“Something smells good.” Luke rounded the corner in nothing but his black boxers. “Looks good too.”

His lips dipped to mine after he took in the sight of me in one of his t-shirts.

“I’m making waffles.”

“Fuck yeah.” Luke reached for a piece of bacon. “Ha… ha… hot!”

Laughing I poured the batter into the waffle maker and shut it. “Why do you always eat the food when its too hot?”

“Because I never learn.”

His arms wrapped around my waist pulling me into his chest. “Man I love having you in my kitchen.”

“Yeah because I’m the only one who cooks around here.” I ran a finger down his bicep.

Pulling back, he eyed me. “Not true. I man the grill.”

I put my hands up in defense before popping the waffle out and dumping another round of batter in. Luke sang along with the music as he continued to stuff his face with bacon. I watched as he buttered up his waffle and smeared it in syrup. Reaching in the cupboard for cups I noticed there was only one.
